The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has unveiled the payment schedule for social grants for April 2025, providing crucial information for beneficiaries eager to access their funds promptly. Starting from April 2, 2025, recipients of Older Persons Grants will receive their payments, with those linked to Child Support Grants or Foster Care Grants also gaining access to their funds on the same day. Following this, Disability Grants are set to be disbursed on April 3, 2025, including any linked grants. All other grants, including Child Support and Foster Care Grants, will be available from April 4, 2025.
SASSA has urged beneficiaries to take note of these dates to ensure they do not miss out on their payments. Beneficiaries still using the Gold SASSA card are reminded that the deadline for swapping to the new black Postbank card is April 30, 2025. This transition is designed to enhance control over their funds and allow for more convenient collection. The SASSA/SAPO card remains a valid debit card that can be utilized at ATMs and major retailers, including SPAR, Checkers, Shoprite, Boxer, Pick n Pay, and Cambridge. SASSA has also emphasized the importance of keeping cards and PINs secure to prevent fraud.
April 2025 is a significant month not only for the release of payment schedules but also for the increase in grants. Beneficiaries aged between 60 and 74 years will receive R2 310, while those over 75 will receive R2 330 starting April 2. Individuals receiving Disability Grants will also see a payment of R2 310, and War Veterans will receive the higher stipend of R2 330 from this month onward. This increase comes amidst a backdrop of rising living costs and aims to support the elderly population who often struggle financially.
The adjustments to grant amounts were announced following a delayed 2025 Budget Speech by the Finance Minister, revealing above-inflation increases of 5.9%, compared to 4.9% in 2024. This move reflects the government’s commitment to providing for residents over the age of 60 who are no longer financially independent. However, SASSA is currently grappling with maladministration issues, with reports indicating that approximately 75,000 deceased beneficiaries continue to receive millions in grants each month.
In light of these challenges, SASSA has put forth a reminder to new applicants regarding the asset and means testing that is required to qualify for the grants. Only those who meet specific criteria, including income limits and asset valuations, will be eligible to receive the benefits. For single applicants, the income limit is set at R8 070 per month (R96 840 annually), while married applicants cannot exceed R16 140 per month (R193 680 annually). Furthermore, total declared assets must not surpass R1 372 800 for single applicants and R2 745 600 for married applicants.
For those interested in applying for the April 2025 SASSA Old-Age Grants, the process requires in-person visits to a SASSA office or branch, as there is no online application available. Applicants must bring essential documents, including a South African ID, proof of marital status, proof of residence, financial statements, and any relevant asset information. The application process can take up to three months, but successful applicants will receive backdated funds from the date of their initial application.
To assist those who may face difficulties in reaching a SASSA office due to age or health issues, the agency allows family members or loved ones to help with the application process. A letter from a doctor is required to explain why the applicant cannot apply themselves, and all documentation must be certified by a commissioner of oaths.
It is worth noting that the ongoing migration from the Gold to the Black Postbank card has created significant challenges for SASSA, with many beneficiaries still facing issues. Postbank clients who have not yet completed this transition now have until May 31, 2025, to do so. As of now, there are concerns that the remaining 3 million Postbank clients may not be served in time given the current pace of migration.
The agency has also provided a timeline for the upcoming payment dates for the next quarter: payments will be made on April 2, 2025; May 6, 2025; and June 3, 2025. Beneficiaries should be aware that payments may take between two to three days to reflect in their bank accounts.
As the April 2025 payment schedule unfolds, beneficiaries are encouraged to stay informed and ensure they have the necessary documentation ready for their applications. For any inquiries or assistance, beneficiaries can contact SASSA through their toll-free line at 0800 601 011, or reach out via email at [email protected].
