Saskia Belleman Honored As Knight For Journalism Excellence

Court reporter recognized for shaping legal journalism and public understanding

Saskia Belleman, a prominent court reporter for De Telegraaf, received the prestigious title of Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau on April 25, 2025, during the annual honors ceremony known as the 'lintjesregen'. This recognition was bestowed upon her by Amsterdam's Mayor Femke Halsema, who noted Belleman's significant contributions to the field of court journalism.

According to the municipality of Amsterdam, "She has shaped the profession of court journalist and has been able to meet the broad social demand for explanation about the rule of law." Belleman's work has not only been impactful in the courtroom but also in the public's understanding of legal issues, making her a vital figure in contemporary journalism.

In addition to her royal honor, Belleman was recently named Journalist of the Year 2024 by Villamedia, an accolade that highlights her exceptional reporting skills. The jury praised her podcast, 'Zij is van mij', which addresses the critical issue of femicide in the Netherlands. Her accurate and empathetic court reporting has earned her respect and admiration within the journalistic community. Earlier this year, she was also awarded the Machiavelli Prize, further cementing her status as a leading voice in journalism.

Joining Belleman in receiving honors this year were several notable figures in the arts and entertainment sectors. Thriller writer Tomas Ross, known for blending real events with fictional narratives, was appointed Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion in The Hague on the same day. Ross, whose real name is Willem Hogendoorn, has authored numerous bestselling thrillers and scripted popular television series, including 'Bernhard, schavuit van Oranje'.

Belinda Meuldijk, a lyricist who contributed significantly to the music career of her late ex-husband Rob de Nijs, was also knighted in Apeldoorn. Meuldijk, who wrote many of De Nijs's hits such as 'Hou Me Vast', 'Alles Wat Ademt', and 'Banger Hart', received this honor for her substantial contributions to Dutch music and her efforts in advocating for autism awareness and animal welfare.

Among the other honorees were Robert van der Kroft, the creator of the beloved comic strip 'Sjors en Sjimmie', and musician Arjen Lucassen, known by his stage name Ayreon. Dance pioneer Eddy De Clercq was recognized for his influential work in the music scene, while Harm Wolters, a member of the musical group Ancora, received a decoration for his dedication to helping individuals with disabilities engage in sports.

The 'lintjesregen' is an annual event in the Netherlands where individuals who have made significant contributions to society are honored with royal distinctions. This year’s ceremony highlighted the diverse talents and achievements of those recognized, from journalism and literature to music and social advocacy.

As Belleman and her fellow honorees celebrated their achievements, the event served as a reminder of the vital roles that these individuals play in shaping culture, raising awareness, and inspiring future generations. Belleman's journey from a court reporter to a knight exemplifies the impact of dedicated journalism on society and the importance of transparency in the legal system.

In a world increasingly driven by sensationalism, Belleman's commitment to factual reporting and public education about the justice system stands out. Her accolades reflect not only her personal achievements but also the growing recognition of the importance of journalism in fostering an informed citizenry.

As the dust settles on this year’s honors, one thing remains clear: the contributions of these individuals have left an indelible mark on Dutch society, inspiring others to follow in their footsteps and continue the legacy of excellence in their respective fields.
