SAS Flight Returns Mid-Flight After Severe Turbulence

Passengers relieved as SAS flight turns back to Copenhagen after extreme turbulence leads to safety checks

A Stockholm-to-Miami flight experienced severe turbulence, prompting the crew to make the difficult decision to turn around and head back to Europe. This distressing incident occurred on Thursday during the Scandinavian Airlines flight which was intended to be one of those long-haul flights at over nine hours, but led to unexpected complications.

The Scandinavian Airlines flight SK957 set off from Stockholm Arlanda Airport at roughly 12:09 AM UTC. It was on its way to Miami International Airport when it encountered severe turbulence approximately four hours later, as the aircraft was flying at 35,000 feet near Greenland. This sudden bout of turbulence was reported to have been severe enough to cause alarm among passengers and crew.

Images shared on social media captured the unsettling aftermath within the cabin. Passengers expressed their discomfort and fear as their seats jolted violently during the turbulence. One user, who identified themselves as ‘ZamZamZam’ on Twitter, shared pictures of the chaotic cabin shortly after the incident, as well as the weather patterns near Greenland blamed for the disturbance.

Given the severity of the turbulence, the flight crew wisely opted for safety first. Alexandra Lindgren Kaoukji, the press manager for Scandinavian Airlines, highlighted the industry’s standard protocols during such situations, stating, "When severe turbulence occurs, the aircraft must always be carefully inspected. It is standard in the industry. We cannot do the inspection in the USA; it must be done at home, and in this case, Copenhagen." This meant returning to the Danish capital for necessary checks, prioritizing the safety of all onboard.

Flight SK957, operated by Airbus A330-300, also had to manage the descent back to Copenhagen. Reports indicate the plane descended approximately 8,300 feet (around 2,500 meters) post-turbulence, indicating the crew's swift response. The updated estimated landing time was around 23:30 local time, and it took nearly two hours from the time of their turnaround.

According to the latest updates, officials pointed out there was small damage reported on the aircraft. Passengers onboard were reassured of calm moods throughout the ordeal, with one person tweeting, "All information is small damage. No problems and calm moods on board!" This sentiment helped alleviate some worries among those following the flight’s progress on social media.

Once safely landed, Scandinavian Airlines arranged accommodations for the affected passengers, ensuring they would have hotel rooms for the night before rebooking them on flights to Miami scheduled for Friday.

This incident is not isolated when it relates to turbulence. Just days earlier, on November 13, another airline, Qantas, faced turbulence during one of their flights within Australia. This situation led to injuries among several passengers, including a woman and child, highlighting the risks associated with turbulence when safety protocols aren’t followed strictly. Reports suggested neither was wearing seatbelts at the time of the turbulence, underlining the importance of adhering to safety instructions flying.

A similar incident involved Lufthansa just the week prior, where 11 people were injured during turbulence over the Atlantic. Each case serves as stark reminders of the unpredictability of air travel and the measures airlines must take when faced with such rapidly changing conditions.

Returning to the Scandinavian Airlines flight, it set the stage for many conversations about safety protocols, what new measures could be implemented to prevent such episodes, and how passengers handle severe turbulence mentally and physically.

After the turbulence encounter, the airline's response drew attention not just for its necessity, but also for how it managed to buffer passenger experiences by keeping them informed and attended to. Despite the unsettling experience, many passengers took to social media to share their experiences, often with mixed feelings of fear and gratitude for the crew’s efforts.

Overall, the turbulence experienced by flight SK957 showcased the challenges airlines face and their commitment to passenger safety. Even though such incidents can induce fear, they also reflect the constant training and dedication of airline crews to handle emergencies effectively, ensuring someone is always watching your back, even at 35,000 feet.

For those traveling—especially on long-haul flights—it serves as a reminder to stay buckled up and follow safety instructions. Incidents like these stress the importance of preparation and the need to respect the unpredictable nature of weather and atmospheric conditions, which can turn any flight, even the smoothest, turbulent.
