Sanrio Launches Hello Kitty Airport Campaign For Osaka Expo

Oita Prefecture aims to attract visitors with a heartwarming initiative featuring local culture and iconic characters.

In a delightful fusion of tourism and pop culture, Sanrio Entertainment and Oita Prefecture have announced a captivating campaign to attract visitors ahead of the highly anticipated Osaka/Kansai Expo 2025. On March 17, the two partners unveiled plans that not only promote the regional beauty of Oita but also create a unique experience for guests, with events scheduled from April to October 2025.

Central to this initiative is the renaming of Oita Airport to the charming moniker of 'Oita Hello Kitty Airport'. This playful title aims to evoke warmth and excitement, capturing the hearts of travelers arriving in this picturesque region. During the campaign, expected to receive both domestic and international tourists, Oita Airport will feature life-sized panels of beloved Sanrio characters, providing perfect photo opportunities for families and fans alike.

Additionally, colorful flags decorated with local specialties, such as kabosu citrus, will be prominently displayed throughout the airport, enhancing the festive atmosphere of welcome. This creative approach not only highlights Oita’s regional products but also reflects the spirit of collaboration between Sanrio and local culture.

To bolster access to Oita's attractions, Oita Prefecture will deploy an efficient transportation network. From August to November, daily bus services—totaling 18 routes—will connect Oita Airport, JR Beppu Station, and Harmony Land, ensuring seamless travel for visitors eager to explore the area. This accessibility is crucial for facilitating tourism and maximizing enjoyment for guests.

Sanrio Entertainment President Akio Kobori, alongside Oita Governor Kiichiro Sato, expressed enthusiasm about promoting the unique offerings of Oita. At a press conference held at the prefectural office, Kobori highlighted the region's rich resources, stating, “Oita has wonderful resources such as hot springs, food, and people. We want to promote Oita and Harmony Land's charm, creating the most heartwarming airport in the world with the characters.” The emphasis on hospitality and cultural richness aims to create an unforgettable experience for expo attendees.

This campaign follows the regional partnership established last December between the Sanrio Group and Oita Prefecture, designed explicitly to enhance tourism initiatives and showcase Oita’s dynamic appeal. With this collaboration, the two entities hope to motivate more visitors to explore Oita's natural beauty and cultural heritage, which includes its renowned hot springs and culinary delights.

As the Osaka/Kansai Expo approaches, the spotlight on Oita is set to brighten, thanks to this innovative campaign featuring renowned characters and local charm. The excitement surrounding the expo offers a valuable opportunity for Oita to present itself to a global audience, alerting tourists to the myriad experiences available—a journey into a world where culture meets creativity.

In conclusion, with the unveiling of the 'Oita Hello Kitty Airport' initiative, coupled with comprehensive transport solutions and character interactions, Oita Prefecture is preparing to extend a warm welcome to the globe. As visitors arrive for the expo, they will undoubtedly find themselves immersed in local culture, building memories that resonate with the heart and spirit of this vibrant region.
