Sangi Railway has officially announced the introduction of its new 5000 series trains set to operate on the Sangi Line, which runs between Kintetsu Tomita and Nishi-Fujiwara. This announcement was made on March 10, 2025, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for local rail transport.
The 5000 series is comprised of refurbished trains originally from the JR Tokai's 211 series. Notably, this transfer marks the first time these specific cars have found their way to a local private railway, emphasizing the unique transition within the railway industry. A total of 30 cars have been transferred, with 24 set for commercial use and 6 reserved for parts.
Scheduled for commercial operations to begin in May 2025, the new trains will be introduced in phases, with eight 3-car trains being deployed. Crew training will take place prior to this launch, ensuring all operational standards are met. The existing trains currently utilized on the Sangi Line will be gradually retired as this transition progresses.
Each of the new 5000 series trains is equipped with modern amenities aimed at enhancing the passenger experience. These include LCD displays installed above the doors, which will provide information on station stops and transfer options, as well as communication-type emergency notification devices for safety. The interior of each train has been completely renovated, featuring renewed seating and flooring, complemented by upgraded LED lighting. Such changes aim to offer passengers a brighter and more comfortable environment.
To add to the user experience, the trains will feature automatic broadcasts in both Japanese and English. These announcements will be accompanied by delightful auditory cues, including melodies played after leaving the first station and just before arriving at the final destination. The melodies, composed by Tamaki Yanagida, are carefully themed: "Kirameki no Hamakaze," which signifies the sea, wind, and light of Ise Bay, will play for journeys heading toward Kintetsu Tomita, whereas "Yama no Okurimono," conveying the warmth of the Suzuka Mountains, plays for trains heading toward Nishi-Fujiwara.
This upgrade to the Sangi Line reveals Sangi Railway's commitment to modernization and enhances its service quality for the growing number of commuters and travelers. The aesthetic redesign also includes revised line colors, mirroring the new chapter this railway is embarking on.
