Sanfrecce Hiroshima Extends Winning Streak To Five Matches

Jermaine's First Goal Leads Hiroshima to Victory Over Yokohama F. Marinos

Sanfrecce Hiroshima maintained their impressive form with a solid 1-0 victory over Yokohama F. Marinos on February 23, 2025, during the second round of the Meiji Yasuda J1 League at Edion Peace Wing Hiroshima. This triumph marks Hiroshima's fifth consecutive victory across all competitions, following their success at the FUJIFILM SUPER CUP and earlier games in the AFC Champions League (ACL).

The match saw both teams competing at high intensity, but it was Hiroshima who found the breakthrough early in the second half. Jermaine, who joined from Iwata this season, netted his first goal for the club from the penalty spot after being fouled by Jason Quiñones, giving his team the lead just four minutes after the restart.

"Jermaine has been instrumental since his arrival, contributing to our strong start this season. His performance today was key," said head coach Michael Skibbe. With this win, Hiroshima has made it two wins from two matches at the start of the league, echoing their successful pre-season.

The home side began the match brightly, pressuring Yokohama's defense with quick passing and aggressive play. Despite having the upper hand, they struggled to convert possession and chances during the first half, ending the period without goals. Yokohama, aiming for their first league victory after drawing their opening match against Albirex Niigata, matched Hiroshima's intensity but lacked the finishing touch.

After the halftime break, Hiroshima's pressing paid off, as they quickly regained possession deep within Yokohama's half. Tanaka Sō gave Jermaine the opportunity to shoot, resulting in the penalty award and subsequent successful spot-kick.

"It feels great to score my first goal and contribute to the team's success. We worked hard for this win, and I hope to continue this form," Jermaine remarked after the match.

Hiroshima's defense stood firm against late pressure from Yokohama, who made multiple substitutions to change the game’s momentum. Despite this, Hiroshima's backline, including goalkeeper Ōsako Keisuke, remained resolute. Yokohama's attempts to find the equalizer were thwarted time and again, with notable efforts from Matsubara Ken and Anderson Lopes unable to find the net.

With this victory, Sanfrecce Hiroshima's aim for the J1 title looks promising. They lead the league's early standings with momentum, having already secured five wins across competitions. Their next challenge will take place on February 26, where they will face Shimizu S-Pulse away.

"Every game is important for us. We need to maintain this form as we go through the season. Today's result keeps our winning streak alive, and we are motivated to continue it," added Skibbe.

Meanwhile, Yokohama remains without victory after two league matches under new head coach Steve Holland, creating pressure to turn their fortune around quickly.
