Sandeep Reddy Vanga Reveals Sai Pallavi Was Original Choice For Arjun Reddy

Vicky Kaushal stars alongside A.R. Rahman’s music in the epic film Chhaava.

Hyderabad, February 3 - Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga recently revealed some intriguing insights surrounding the casting of his iconic film, Arjun Reddy, during the pre-release event for Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi's upcoming movie Thandel. Vanga, who gained fame with his directorial debut, Arjun Reddy (2017), noted his initial desire to cast the talented actress Sai Pallavi for the female lead role instead of Shalini Pandey, who eventually portrayed the character.

Vanga expressed his admiration for Sai Pallavi, citing her compelling performance throughout her career, especially in the critically acclaimed film Premam. He stated, "I wanted to cast #SaiPallavi in #ArjunReddy, but after hearing my story, the coordinator said she wouldn’t even wear sleeveless, so she definitely wouldn’t act in my film." This comment highlights how the director's vision was altered by external advice, even as his passion for the project remained steadfast.

While both Arjun Reddy and its Hindi remake, Kabir Singh, enjoyed immense box-office success, they also faced scrutiny for depicting toxic relationships and unhealthy character dynamics. The discussion revealed Vanga's recognition of the challenging elements associated with casting, particularly when it intersects with character portrayal.

Interestingly, Vanga later came to learn the individual who advised against casting Sai Pallavi may not have been credible, noting: "I found the coordinator to be fake." The casting decision marked not just a missed opportunity for the actress, known for her preference for family-oriented roles, but also for Vanga, who would have enjoyed her on-screen presence and talent.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the film industry, a dream of Vicky Kaushal has come to fruition, as he stars alongside the legendary composer A.R. Rahman and singer Arijit Singh for the upcoming film Chhaava. This historical action drama is based on the life of Maratha king Sambhaji, with Vicky portraying him alongside Rashmika Mandanna, who plays Maharani Yesubai. Kaushal expressed his excitement, stating, "The song and the portrayal of characters go way beyond the conventional idea of love. It’s about an eternal connection, a bond that's transcends time.”

Both Vicky and Rashmika showcased their enthusiasm for the collaboration with A.R. Rahman, emphasizing the significance of the song "Jaane Tu," penned by Irshad Kamil, which encapsulates the deep, almost divine, connection between their characters. Rashmika said, "I am truly honoured. And, as Vicky mentioned, the relationship between Maharani Yesubai and Maharaj Sambhaji is not just a portrayal of love; it is something divine, connecting us to something greater."

Chhaava, adapted from the Marathi novel Chhava by Shivaji Sawant, marks another exciting chapter for both actors and the filmmaker. The film is grounded not just in romance but also highlights the rich, historical narrative underlying the characters’ relationships, setting itself apart from conventional Bollywood love stories.

Audiences can anticipate the depth of storytelling and musical expression these two films promise to deliver. Vanga and Kaushal, through their respective projects, are pushing the boundaries of narrative art, offering why these films are deserving of their viewers' attention.
