Samsung Launches One UI 7 Beta With Enhanced Security Features

New security measures and features aim to protect user data and privacy amid growing digital threats

Samsung has officially launched the beta version of its One UI 7, bringing with it significant updates aimed at enhancing security and privacy for its users. This update arrives after mounting concerns over data protection, particularly as the digital world becomes increasingly interconnected and vulnerable to various cyber threats. The One UI 7 beta program invites users to explore new features, but more critically, it introduces improved protective measures through Samsung’s Knox system, which has been the backbone of device security for years.

One major highlight of the One UI 7 release is the integration of the Knox Matrix, which has been developed to fortify security across all Samsung devices. The Knox Matrix acts as a centralized hub, continuously monitoring devices through what is described as "secure private blockchain" technology. Users can now see the security status of all their connected devices, including smartphones, tablets, TVs, and even home appliances, at a glance through the Knox Matrix dashboard. This new interface allows users to quickly assess the security level of their devices, with visual indicators ranging from green for safe to red for threats. When risks are identified, the system provides actionable recommendations to help mitigate these threats.

Enhancing data management, One UI 7 introduces features for recovering cloud-stored content. The Enhanced Data Protection feature ensures all connected devices remain synchronized, making backup easier and more reliable. Should users need to switch to a new device, the update facilitates this transition by allowing them to verify credentials using their previous device's lock screen code — be it PIN, pattern, or password. This gives users peace of mind when dealing with potential data losses.

Another significant development is the new passkey functionality, which simplifies the login process to Samsung accounts across devices. Users can now create and utilize passkeys, effectively enhancing the security of their digital identities. This innovative approach allows for quicker and safer authentication across various services and devices without relying on traditional passwords.

Samsung is also putting additional controls at users' fingertips through the Maximum Restrictions feature. This update grants users the ability to block connections to less secure networks, including the now-outdated 2G service, thereby preventing potential data breaches from poorly protected networks. It also carries options to disable automatic connection to Wi-Fi networks, which might compromise data security. Users can even set controls on Samsung services such as Messages and Gallery, allowing them to strip location data from shared photos and prevent unintended downloads of attachments.

The theft protection features have been significantly upgraded as well. One UI 7 now includes Identity Check, which activates if suspicious activities are detected or if the device's PIN becomes compromised. This additional layer of security mandates biometric authentication when making changes to important security settings, particularly when the device is located in unfamiliar or potentially unsafe areas. Users can even set a one-hour delay to thwart unauthorized changes immediately after such alerts.

Samsung’s update will be available initially as part of the beta program for the Galaxy S24 series across several countries, including Germany, India, South Korea, Poland, the UK, and the United States starting today. Participants can enroll through the Samsung Members app. The full version, featuring enhancements beyond security, including design refreshes and new AI capabilities, is anticipated to roll out more broadly with the upcoming Galaxy S series and all Samsung devices early next year.

With these extensive updates, Samsung demonstrates its commitment to maintaining user safety and confidence as the reliance on technology deepens.
