Samsung Frame Faces New Rivals As Art TVs Evolve

TCL's NXTFRAME and Hisense Canvas TV challenge Samsung's design with innovative features and competitive pricing

The ever-evolving world of televisions recently saw new contenders trying to give Samsung's acclaimed Frame TV a run for its money. At the forefront of this revolution are TCL's NXTFRAME and Hisense's Canvas TV, both seeking to claim their share of the art display market by offering innovative features and excellent aesthetics.

Samsung's Frame TV is known for its stunning design and ability to transform living spaces. Instead of the traditional bulky appearance associated with televisions, the Frame can seamlessly blend with your decor by displaying artwork when not in use. This feature, coupled with high-quality video playback for shows and films, has turned it from just another gadget to something of a centerpiece. With various sizes available, the Frame TV appeals to many consumers, but competition is starting to heat up.

TCL's new offering, the NXTFRAME, aims to topple its Samsung rival with multiple attractive features. First off, it heralds itself as the "thinnest all-in-one TV" at just 1.1 inches thick (1.2 inches for the 85-inch version). Unlike Samsung's model, which requires separate hardware components via external boxes, TCL combines everything within the set itself, making installation and viewing effortless.

Similar to the Frame, TCL's NXTFRAME boasts a matte anti-reflective display, allowing for true wall art capability. But here’s the kicker—the TCL TV also incorporates Google TV, giving users access to vast libraries of content and easy navigation through various services. The included "Art Library" offers free access to numerous art pieces, giving it significant appeal to those who want to showcase art alongside their favorite shows and films.

Meanwhile, Hisense has thrown its hat in the ring with its Canvas TV. Like the Frame and the NXTFRAME, it also features antireflective technology, ensuring the displayed artworks and videos are devoid of unnecessary glares. It has been engineered to provide even smoother visuals with its 144Hz refresh rate, setting it apart from both TCL and Samsung, which tap out at 120Hz. The Canvas TV provides vibrant color reproduction of over one billion colors with its own unique technology, Motion Rate 480, enhancing fast-paced content such as sports and video games.

Samsung’s 2024 Frame TV has not sat still, either. This year’s version boasts Pantone validation, meaning the colors on display closely mimic what artists intend when creating their works. The QLED technology offers impressive depth and vivid hues, combined with incredible detail, making it stand out when it brings famous artworks to life. This dedication to accurate color representation keeps it at the forefront of consumer preferences.

Notably, with Samsung's monthly updates, owners can now access curated art pieces for free, as well as purchase subscriptions for larger libraries from institutions such as the Louvre and Musée d'Orsay. This aspect caters to art lovers and viewers alike, who want more than just television programming from their devices. The inclusion of customizable frames and bezels gives consumers options to tailor their Frame's appearance, allowing it to complement any room style.

With the rise of competitors like TCL and Hisense, Samsung is no longer the single name dominating the art TV market, but it retains significant influence. For those considering investing heavily in art televisions, price often becomes the deciding factor. Samsung's Frame TV ranges from approximately $900 for the 43-inch model to around $4,300 for the gigantic 85-inch version, whereas the Canvas TV by Hisense starts at about $1,000 for the 55-inch and $1,300 for the 65-inch. TCL’s NXTFRAME starts slightly higher at $1,499 for its 55-inch model.

This competition is good news for consumers. Consumers now have diverse choices; more options mean more competition, which typically drives down prices and enhances the features available across the board. Whichever smart TV you choose, there’s no denying these products are making significant strides with their sleek designs and integrated technology. The art TV market is poised for continued growth, with these brands pushing to stay relevant.

Let's also take pricing and specifications for each device to understand the competitive edge better. Samsung's Frame TV has multiple size offerings, and its capabilities include:

  • 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160)

  • 120Hz refresh rate

  • Multiple HDR support, including Quantum HDR

  • Art service subscription of $5.99/month or $49.99/year

Hisense's Canvas TV provides similar specs, though it distinguishes itself with:

  • 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160)

  • 144Hz refresh rate

  • Diverse HDR support, including Dolby Vision

  • No subscription fee for the art service

Lastly, TCL's NXTFRAME is equipped with features such as:

  • 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160)

  • 120Hz refresh rate

  • Multiple matte options and AI capabilities for customization

  • Subscription service for art included as part of the Google TV ecosystem

With so many features and attractive designs, these television competitors are invigorated, changing the way we perceive our living spaces. Whether art enthusiasts or avid movie watchers, these products offer something for everyone.
