Samsung has officially started mass production of its highly anticipated Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 smartphones, along with their accompanying accessories. This move comes as part of the company’s established timeline, which typically sees production ramping up about two months prior to its annual Unpacked event, scheduled for this summer. Samsung Display, the tech giant's screen manufacturing partner, has also initiated production of OLED panels specifically designed for both devices. These panels will be sent to Samsung's factory in Vietnam, where a significant portion of its Galaxy smartphones are assembled before being distributed globally.
However, in a notable shift, Samsung has revised its production targets downward for this year compared to previous generations, citing a decline in anticipated market demand. Specifically, the company has set a limited output of approximately 3 million units for the Galaxy Z Flip7 and around 2 million units for the Galaxy Z Fold7, reflecting a substantial decrease of about 40% from last year’s figures.
In addition to these two models, Samsung is reportedly gearing up for its first triple-folding smartphone, expected to debut at the end of 2025. Initial production for this innovative device is projected to be a mere 200,000 units, indicating its positioning as a niche, high-end product.
Meanwhile, speculation continues regarding the Galaxy Z Flip FE, a rumored budget version of the flip phone series. As of now, there has been no official confirmation on whether this model will launch alongside the Fold7 and Flip7.
Samsung's decision to reduce production targets comes amid a challenging landscape for the foldable smartphone market, which has not met industry expectations. Reports indicate that the company is also considering the specifications for its upcoming devices, with the Galaxy Z Fold7 potentially featuring the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, similar to its Galaxy S25 series. In contrast, the chip selection for the Galaxy Z Flip7 remains uncertain; while some prototypes have been spotted using Exynos chips, there are indications that Samsung may not be ready to utilize the Exynos 2500 in time, leading to speculation that the Flip7 might continue with Snapdragon.
Notably, the Galaxy Z Fold7 is anticipated to be thinner than its competitor, the OPPO Find N5, with a folded thickness of about 8.2 mm. This design choice could enhance its appeal in a market increasingly focused on portability and user experience.
The timely commencement of production for the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Flip7 is viewed positively, especially as Samsung’s major competitor, Apple, prepares to launch its iPhone 17 lineup. Apple is also reportedly working on its first foldable iPhone, set to debut in 2027 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the iPhone’s launch.
As Samsung navigates the complexities of the current smartphone market, the company’s strategic adjustments reflect a keen awareness of consumer demands and competitive pressures.
