Sam's Club Announces Major Overhaul Of Shopping Experience

The retailer plans to eliminate checkout lanes and enhance digital capabilities nationwide.

Major changes are on the horizon for Sam's Club locations across the United States, particularly in Michigan, as the company embarks on an ambitious plan to transform its shopping experience. The retailer, owned by Walmart, has announced a complete renovation of its stores, aiming to streamline the checkout process and enhance customer interaction through innovative technology.

During the 2025 Investment Community Meeting, Sam's Club President and CEO Chris Nicholas outlined the company’s strategy to double membership and significantly increase sales and profits over the next eight to ten years. This strategy includes the elimination of traditional checkout lanes in favor of a digital-first approach that leverages the Scan & Go feature on the Sam's Club mobile app.

With over 600 locations nationwide, including multiple sites in Michigan, the retailer is set to remodel all existing clubs to mirror the design and operational model of a new test store in Grapevine, Texas. This store has been operational for about six months and has successfully eliminated all cash registers, allowing customers to scan items using their smartphones as they shop.

The Grapevine location's approach has proven effective, prompting Sam's Club to roll out similar changes across the country. According to Nicholas, "This is one of the fastest, most scalable transformations happening in retail today." The Scan & Go feature enables customers to add items to their carts and pay through the app, with an AI-powered system verifying purchases at the exit, significantly reducing wait times and enhancing convenience.

As part of the transformation, the areas where cash registers once stood will be repurposed to display online-only items, including unique offerings like 12-foot Christmas trees and diamond rings. This redesign not only modernizes the shopping experience but also creates more space for staff to prepare e-commerce orders for curbside pickup and home delivery.

While the transition to a digital shopping model is set to enhance the customer experience, some long-time shoppers may find the changes daunting. Nicholas acknowledged that the company is committed to ensuring that staff will be available to assist customers in navigating the new system. He stated, "When a member has a meaningful, positive interaction with an associate, they’re more likely to renew — and stay loyal." This focus on customer service is part of the broader strategy to cultivate a culture that supports both employees and members.

In addition to the store renovations, Sam's Club plans to open 30 new locations across the U.S. annually, aiming for approximately 15 new clubs each year moving forward. This growth strategy is particularly noteworthy given the current challenges faced by many retailers in the market. Nicholas emphasized the resilience of Sam's Club, stating, "In times of plenty, we do well. But in tough times, we do really well."

As the company prepares for these extensive changes, specific timelines for the remodels and the rollout of the Scan & Go system in individual stores have yet to be disclosed. However, the commitment to enhancing the shopping experience is clear, with a focus on integrating digital capabilities into the physical retail environment.

Sam's Club is not only revamping its physical stores but is also enhancing its digital presence. Recent improvements to the online shopping experience include free shipping for Plus members and free curbside pickup for all club members. This dual approach of physical and digital expansion aims to provide a seamless, elevated experience for customers.

As shoppers in Michigan and across the country prepare for these changes, they can expect a more modern shopping environment that prioritizes convenience and efficiency. The move towards a fully digital shopping experience reflects broader trends in retail, where technology increasingly shapes consumer interactions.

In summary, Sam's Club is poised to revolutionize its shopping experience by implementing a comprehensive strategy that combines store renovations with cutting-edge technology. With a focus on customer interaction, digital innovation, and expansion, the retailer aims to solidify its position as a leader in the warehouse retail sector.
