NEW ORLEANS – Sam Houston earned its first FBS bowl game victory with a 31-26 victory over Georgia Southern in the 2024 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl on Thursday evening at the Caesars Superdome. The Bearkats (10-3, 6-2 CUSA) defense forced a handful of Eagle mishaps, including four interceptions, and turned those mistakes directly to points for their squad.
Defensive back Jaylon Jimmerson was named the game’s MVP after he intercepted two passes and racked up ten tackles along with a tackle for loss. Jimmerson’s contributions were pivotal; his first interception came on Georgia Southern’s first play from scrimmage, which opened the scoring for Sam Houston.
The second interception by Jimmerson occurred with just under five minutes left in the first half, leading to yet another Bearkats score four plays later. The most significant moment for Sam Houston came at the start of the fourth quarter, when they executed an eight-play, 88-yard scoring drive, pushing their lead to 28-19 with 11:37 remaining.
During this game-altering drive, wide receiver Simeon Evans made significant contributions, fighting down to the one-yard line on a 31-yard gain which set up quarterback Hunter Watson’s second rushing touchdown of the night. Evans ended the game as Sam Houston's leading receiver with seven receptions and 85 yards, of which 77 yards came after the catch, tapping his speed for a 33-yard touchdown on a screen pass.
Hunter Watson had one of his strongest showings this season, completing 23 passes for 213 yards and tossing one touchdown, besides adding two rushing touchdowns. His outstanding performance marked his ninth multi-score game of the season, displaying both his ability to pass effectively and capably rush when needed.
The game opened with significant momentum for the Bearkats; after one incomplete pass, Watson went on to complete 14 straight passes, helping Sam Houston build a 21-7 lead during the first half. This impressive run tied the New Orleans Bowl record for consecutive completions.
Sam Houston’s victory is particularly noteworthy as it extends Conference USA’s winning streak in this bowl to three, marking the second-straight year wherein a member of the conference achieved its first bowl win at the New Orleans Bowl, following Jacksonville State's overtime triumph last season.
The Bearkats demonstrated resilience throughout the game, effectively capitalizing on Georgia Southern's missteps. The Eagles, having finished with four turnovers, struggled to maintain possession and translate their drives effectively.
Despite being the underdog and dealing with intense pressure about their performance, Sam Houston showcased their capacity to compete at the FBS level, culminating this season on a high note with their inaugural bowl game victory.
This triumph resonates beyond just numbers; it signals the arrival of Sam Houston as contenders at the FBS level, building excitement for their future endeavors within the college football arena.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, acting head coach and offensive coordinator Brad Cornelsen remarked on the effort and determination displayed by his players, noting the hurdles the team faced throughout the season, including the heavy roster turnover from transfers and opt-outs.
Overall, this game was not only pivotal for the Bearkats' legacy but also engaged the crowd at Caesars Superdome, delivering thrilling moments of excitement and showcasing the heart of college football.
