Sam Fender Headlines Radio 1's Big Weekend 2025

Major music festival set to showcase top artists in Liverpool this May.

Sam Fender has been officially announced as the first headliner for Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2025, set to take place from May 23 to May 25 at Sefton Park, Liverpool. This exciting news was revealed yesterday during the Radio 1 Breakfast Show hosted by Greg James.

The festival has attracted attention as it marks the first time Liverpool will host Radio 1's Big Weekend, which traditionally showcases renowned musical talents from around the world. Alongside Fender, notable artists such as Myles Smith, Wet Leg, Blossoms, and Lola Young are scheduled to perform, amassing a total of approximately 100 acts during the weekend.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Fender stated, “Excited to announce we’re coming to Liverpool for Radio 1’s Big Weekend in May. Thanks for inviting us – see you there!” His excitement is matched by indie rock band Blossoms, who described Liverpool as “a city close to our hearts,” pledging to deliver an unforgettable performance.

The festival, which is organized by BBC Radio 1, will feature performances across four stages: the Radio 1 Main Stage, Radio 1 New Music Stage, Radio 1 Dance Stage, and BBC Introducing. With over 100,000 fans expected to attend, it promises to be one of the biggest music events of the year.

Myles Smith, another confirmed act, shared his disbelief at being part of such a stellar lineup, calling it “unreal.” He reflected on the personal significance of this event, saying, “Big Weekend was always a dream of mine, and to be on the line-up again is insane.” Similarly, Lola Young, who is renowned for her hit song “Messy,” expressed excitement about performing, teasing the crowd with the statement, “It’s going to get Messy!”

Radio 1’s selection of Liverpool as the host city aligns with their aim to bring large-scale events to locations outside of major metropolitan areas. Liverpool is globally recognized for its rich musical heritage, being the birthplace of legendary bands like The Beatles and many others, making it fitting for such a prominent festival.

Greg James made the announcement with palpable excitement, saying, “FINALLY… Radio 1 HAS COME BACK… to Liv…er…pooool!” His playful tone underscored the anticipation building around the festival, not just for the fans but also for the artists involved.

The event is expected to provide not only music to fans but also significant economic benefits to the city of Liverpool. According to Councillor Liam Robinson, Leader of Liverpool City Council, “Radio 1’s Big Weekend has found the perfect home this year in Liverpool. Our music, our audiences, and our history of delivering world-class major events add up to what is certain to be an incredible three days this May.”

Additional acts and details about ticketing will be revealed in the coming months, as the excitement continues to build around this monumental event. Radio 1’s Big Weekend will be broadcast live throughout the weekend on BBC Radio 1, with performances available for viewing on iPlayer and through BBC Sounds.

Fans eager for tickets are advised to keep their eyes peeled for announcements, as previous events have seen tickets sell out quickly due to high demand. The festival not only promises thrilling performances but also aims to champion sustainability, aligning with BBC’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Sam Fender, coming off the success of his third album, People Watching, which releases shortly before the festival, will undoubtedly deliver memorable moments on stage. Anticipation is building among fans as they prepare to welcome both Fender and the exciting lineup to Liverpool.

This year’s Big Weekend follows last year’s successful event held in Luton, which featured artists such as Coldplay and Raye. Radio 1's Big Weekend continues to be one of the UK’s most awaited annual music festivals, and this year promises to uphold its legacy.

With the full lineup still to be announced and events fast approaching, music fans across the UK are buzzing with excitement about Radio 1's Big Weekend 2025.
