Salmonella Outbreak Triggers Massive Cucumber Recall Across North America

Consumers urged to check cucumbers sold under the SunFed brand due to potential health risks amid salmonella concerns

A recent salmonella outbreak has led to the recall of fresh cucumbers distributed across the United States and Canada. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) acted urgently, prompting consumers to check their refrigerators for the implicated cucumbers sold under the SunFed brand. Marked from October 12 to November 26, these cucumbers are becoming the topic of concern as they have been linked to multiple salmonella cases across more than two dozen states.

SunFed Produce, based out of Rio Rico, Arizona, has issued the recall after the FDA notified them of potential contamination. The specific cucumbers being recalled were packaged either in bulk cardboard containers bearing the “SunFed” label or placed in generic white boxes and black plastic crates, each with stickers identifying the growing company, Agrotato, S.A. de C.V.

Currently, the recall affects at least 26 states, including Minnesota, Texas, and California, as well as parts of Canada, particularly the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Ontario. This broad reach means consumers across vast areas need to stay vigilant. The urgency of the situation is underscored by the FDA, which stated, “Anyone with the recalled product should not consume, serve, sell, or distribute it.”

The outbreak has led to at least 68 confirmed cases of salmonella illness nationwide, including 18 hospitalizations, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While no deaths have been reported, the situation remains serious, especially for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms of salmonella infection typically manifest within 6 hours to 6 days after consumption and may include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, lasting between four to seven days. Most healthy individuals recover without the need for medical intervention, but severe cases can lead to serious complications. The CDC emphasizes caution and stresses the importance of washing hands and cleaning surfaces after handling the suspected products.

Craig Slate, the president of SunFed, expressed concern, stating, “We are working closely with authorities and the implicated ranch to determine the possible cause.” According to him, food safety and consumer health have been priorities for SunFed for over three decades. “We require all of our growers to strictly adhere to FDA food safety protocols,” Slate added, emphasizing their commitment to the health of consumers.

Consumers who believe they may have purchased the recalled cucumbers are urged to either dispose of them or return them to the point of purchase for refunds. Those suspecting they may have ingested contaminated cucumbers and are feeling unwell should seek medical advice quickly.
