Saku Chosei High Wins National High School Ekiden Championship

Outstanding performances highlight the path for future stars at the Kyoto championship event.

The 75th National High School Ekiden Championship culminated on December 22, 2024, at Takebishi Stadium, Kyoto, where the best high school runners showcased their talent over 42.195 kilometers across seven sections. This prestigious event not only determines the nation's top high school athletes but also serves as a platform for future stars of running and athletics.

Leading the charge, Saku Chosei High School from Nagano reigned supreme, capturing their consecutive championship title amid fierce competition. The boys' division featured significant performances, including Ryota Suzuki of Yachiyo Shoin High School, who established the fastest time for the first section, clocking an impressive 28 minutes and 43 seconds, making him the fastest Japanese runner ever recorded for this segment.

Highlighting the boys' race, Tetsu Sasaki, another remarkable talent from Saku Chosei, made headlines not only for his speed but also for his distinct turning technique during the handover from the third to fourth section. Fans and commentators were astonished when he executed a counterclockwise turn instead of the usual style as he approached the exchange zone. His agile maneuver drew comments online, with many expressing their admiration: "What was up with Sasaki's turn—that was incredible!" Sasaki completed his segment with the fastest time of 23 minutes and 38 seconds, echoing his satisfaction by stating, "I fulfilled my role well, enduring the headwinds."

Meanwhile, as the boys’ competition intensified, the girls' race also showcased incredible talent, led by Nagano East High School. With persistence and skill, they managed to clinch the title, exhibiting outstanding teamwork and determination. The second-place finishers, Sendai Ikuei High School, once again proved to be formidable competitors, maintaining their reputation as one of the nation’s top schools.

The event had both personal and national significance for many runners. Young athletes like Suzuki, already eyeing bigger goals, expressed his aspirations openly post-race: "I aimed for the best performance and hope to reach the Olympics." This statement not only reflects his personal ambition but also encompasses the spirit and future possibilities for all participants of the championship.

Overall, the 75th National High School Ekiden Championship was not just about competition, but it also brought together communities, highlighting the dedication and perseverance of young athletes. The connections made and experiences shared during the ekiden are invaluable for these young competitors as they move forward.

The future of ekiden running looks bright with young stars like Sasaki and Suzuki leading the way, inspiring the next generation to chase their dreams. With the national spotlight shining on them, these athletes are well on their way to shaping their place within Japan's athletics history and paving the road for aspiring runners.
