Sac State Launches Native American College To Boost Inclusivity

New initiative aims to support Native American students and address financial transparency concerns

On November 8, 2024, Sacramento State University (Sac State) took significant strides toward enhancing education and inclusion with the announcement of the Native American College. The event unfolded at the California State Capitol, where President Luke Wood, alongside assembly member James Ramos and other community leaders, highlighted the importance of this initiative. The new college is poised to be beneficial not just for Native American students but also to enrich the university’s overall community.

The establishment of the Native American College aligns with Sac State's commitment to diversity and equity within higher education. President Wood articulated how this college intends to create programs and pathways for Native American students, fostering both academic and cultural engagement. The ceremony was also filled with colorful traditional attire, symbolizing the rich heritage and history of the Native American community, and punctuated celebrations of their culture through music and dance.

Along with this landmark announcement, Sac State also navigated through the recent political arena following the 2024 elections, where Republicans claimed the presidency and Senate positions, whereas Democrats retained control over many state government roles, including California. These political shifts have had rippling effects across various university sectors, particularly concerning funding and support for educational programs.

Meanwhile, students at Sac State have been expressing growing concerns over financial transparency. Following months of discussions about tuition and fee increases approved earlier this year, many students reacted strongly to the plans for the new stadium development, believing the funds could have been allocated to more pressing needs within the campus community. “Some of us barely get by,” voiced one student, emphasizing their struggle against rising costs amid economic uncertainty. Both faculty and students feel they deserve clarity on how funds are being spent and whether these investments truly align with student needs.

Campus security has also become a pressing topic, especially following the release of the Clery Report, which revealed startling statistics—crime reports have risen over 200% since 2021. This has sparked debates among students and faculty about safety measures on campus. Among the reported incidents was a sexual battery case, raising alarms about campus security and prompting Sac State PD to issue warnings and advisories.

Community engagement was also demonstrated during the Día de los Muertos gathering, which honors those who have passed away, with specific focus on children lost to the U.S. custody system. Ofrendas adorned the library quad with toys and memorabilia, illustrating Sac State's dedication to reflecting diverse cultural practices and supporting its students’ emotional well-being.

Despite these challenges, Sac State launched the National Institute on Artificial Intelligence in Society (NIAIS) last year, aiming to integrate AI technology to aid both students and faculty. NIAIS aims to create tools to facilitate learning and provide support systems for academic challenges students face, potentially revolutionizing educational methodologies. This initiative raises hopes of modernizing the learning experience and refining how faculty and students interact with technology.

Sac State’s student body actively engages with various platforms to voice their opinions and gain insights about campus life. This extends to their participation rate—a mere 13% turnout for recent student government elections, which some interpret as indicative of student apathy toward leadership. The Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) continues to encourage students to engage with election processes, ensuring representation matters are adequately addressed.

While the community looks forward to the new Native American College, questions surrounding finances, safety, cultural representation, and technology integration remain at the forefront of discussions among students, faculty, and the administration. Balancing these components will be key to Sac State's continued growth and success as it strives to serve all its students effectively and equitably.
