Saab Launches Final Gotland-Class Submarine After Upgrades

The HMS Halland marks the completion of the Swedish Navy's modernization program for its submarine fleet.

On February 13, 2025, Saab launched the HMS Halland, marking the completion of the Swedish Navy’s mid-life upgrade program for its Gotland-class submarines. This submarine is the third and final unit to undergo such significant modernization, following similar upgrades on the first two submarines, HMS Gotland and HMS Uppland, which completed their enhancements in 2018 and 2020, respectively.

The event took place at Saab's shipyard located at Karlskrona, Sweden's largest naval base, and signifies a major milestone for the Swedish Navy as it bolsters its operational capabilities amid growing geopolitical tensions. The modernization reflects Sweden's commitment to upgrading its naval assets, particularly as the development of the anticipated A26 Blekinge-class submarines progresses.

With the HMS Halland now officially launched, it is equipped with more than twenty core systems, which were either replaced or installed during the modernization. These systems include advanced sensors and command technologies, readying the submarine for integration with the features planned for the future A26-class vessels. Reported investments for this comprehensive upgrade totaled approximately $116 million, underlining the importance placed on enhancing the navy's capabilities.

Mats Wicksell, Head of Saab’s Business Area Kockums, emphasized the significance of this launch, stating, "The launch of HMS Halland is a test of Saab’s ability to modernize and deliver advanced submarines with the capabilities required by the Swedish Navy. With HMS Halland, the Swedish Navy, and by extension NATO, gains an additional asset for defending and monitoring the Baltic Sea." This statement reflects not only the advancements made with this submarine but also highlights how Sweden, via its naval upgrades, plays a strategic role within NATO.

The Swedish Navy maintains a submarine force comprising four units, including three Gotland-class submarines, each with a displacement of 1,500 tons, and one unit from the older Västergötland class, which has been similarly upgraded. This strategic move by naval authorities was anticipated due to the delays associated with the A26-class submarine development, prompting the modernization program to maximize the operational lifespan of existing vessels.

This shift is timely, especially as recent tensions have necessitated increased security measures and preparedness from regional powers. The use of submarines for securing underwater infrastructure and maritime approaches has never been more relevant, particularly with NATO's expanded roles and operations surrounding the Baltic Sea. Following this launch, Saab and the Swedish Navy will engage in extensive testing and evaluations to confirm the effectiveness of newly installed systems, assuring readiness for operational service soon.

The HMS Halland’s modernization signifies not only enhanced capabilities for the Swedish Navy but also fortifies NATO’s defense posture within the region, reflecting the importance of continued investment in naval warfare technology and military readiness. This renewed focus ensures Sweden will remain equipped to safeguard its waters and contribute decisively to NATO operations.
