The contract, detailed by Samsung on December 16, includes 3 billion won as signing bonus, 17 billion won total salary over four years, and up to 6 billion won worth of incentives.
Ryu, who transitioned to Samsung from the KIA Tigers during the previous season, has been recognized for his versatility on the field, capable of playing all infield positions. His contributions have been pivotal for the team, especially as they aimed for higher rankings going forward.
According to Samsung’s official announcement, Ryu’s ability to perform various team tactics was seen as key to the Lions’ tactical execution. Over his career, Ryu has played 953 games, boasting a batting average of .269, hitting 17 home runs and collecting 266 RBIs.
“I’m happy to continue playing for the Samsung Lions,” Ryu remarked after securing his contract. He expressed gratitude not only to the team but to the support he received from teammates, particularly veterans Gu Ja-wook and Kang Min-ho. They played pivotal roles, encouraging him to stay put and expressing his importance to the squad.
Before joining Samsung, Ryu underwent significant development through his stints with the Doosan Bears and KIA. Drafted by Doosan as the 36th overall pick back in 2012, Ryu proved his mettle on the field, enhancing his reputation as he moved between teams. This past season, he participated in 100 games, achieving a .258 batting average with 36 RBIs.
Aside from his individual accolades, Ryu’s strong performance during the playoffs stood out. He recorded impressive statistics, including batting averages of .429 and .400 against the LG Twins and KIA Tigers, respectively, during the postseason. His timely hitting and reliable defense played an instrumental role for Samsung, helping them reach the Korean Series.
After the contracts were finalized, Ryu didn’t hold back on his ambitions, stating, “I have not forgotten the sting of losing the Korean Series. My goal is to win it.” His desire to secure the championship title is evident, prompting both fans and team members to rally behind him.
Support from his family was also highlighted, as Ryu mentioned how his wife and children appreciated the stability of staying with Samsung. They share his enthusiasm for the team’s blue colors and its passionate fanbase.
“Let’s work hard together and show up at the stadium to cheer us on,” he encouraged fans, underlining the bond he feels with the team and its followers.
Ryu’s recent contract demonstrates the team’s commitment not only to retaining seasoned players but to fostering leadership within the squad as they aim for long-term success. His role at the heart of the lineup and as a mentor to younger players has been repeatedly acknowledged. Fans are eager to see what the future holds for Ryu and the Samsung Lions as they strive for victory.
