RWDM Falls Short Again In Promotion Bid Against Lommel

Despite dominating play, RWDM suffers another setback with a 0-1 loss, setting up a crucial match against Zulte Waregem next week.

In a dramatic turn of events, RWDM has once again missed the opportunity to secure promotion to the Jupiler Pro League, falling to Lommel 0-1 in a tense match on April 11, 2025. After an impressive season, the team found themselves in a must-win situation, but it was Lommel who celebrated victory, thanks to a first-half goal from captain Lucas Schoofs.

The match started with RWDM looking to assert their dominance early on. They quickly seized control of the game, but despite their efforts, they struggled to create clear-cut chances. Although Biron managed to find the back of the net, his goal was ruled offside, leaving the home crowd in disbelief.

In the 28th minute, the tide turned when Schoofs capitalized on a corner kick, slotting home the only goal of the match. This setback put RWDM in a precarious position, as they were now forced to chase the game against a resilient Lommel side. RWDM's frustrations mounted as they failed to convert their opportunities.

As the second half unfolded, RWDM ramped up their offensive efforts, determined to find an equalizer. However, their attempts were thwarted time and again by Lommel's goalkeeper, Pieklak, who delivered a stellar performance and kept a clean sheet. RWDM's Parzyszek came close to scoring, but his header went over the bar, and Pieklak was quick to save a close-range effort shortly thereafter.

With just five minutes remaining, the tension reached a boiling point when Parzyszek struck the crossbar, a moment that left fans on the edge of their seats. RWDM continued to press forward, desperately seeking that elusive goal. In the dying moments of the match, Laaziri's shot hit the post after a deflection off Pieklak, sealing RWDM's fate.

Post-match, RWDM's Piotr Parzyszek expressed his disbelief at the outcome, stating, "I can’t believe it. In the first half, we weren’t ourselves. They scored from a set piece where we should have been sharper. But you can win here 4-1; we had enough chances. It’s painful. Even open chances didn’t go in." His frustration was palpable as he reflected on the missed opportunities that could have changed the game.

Coach Yannick Ferrera also shared his thoughts, emphasizing the need to move forward. "Football is sometimes frustrating. The best team doesn’t always win, as we saw today. We had enough situations to score. We must not dwell on today but look ahead to Zulte. This is our third chance, and hopefully, we can make our dream come true. We have a week to prepare," he remarked.

With this loss, RWDM now faces a crucial match against Zulte Waregem on April 18, 2025, where they will need to secure a victory to keep their promotion hopes alive. The pressure mounts as they look to avoid ending the season in disappointment, currently sitting in third place.

Meanwhile, Zulte Waregem has the opportunity to secure their own promotion this matchday if they win against Lokeren-Temse. As the final matchday approaches, all eyes will be on RWDM as they aim to turn their fortunes around in a decisive showdown against Zulte Waregem.

The stakes could not be higher for RWDM, who have now had two chances to clinch promotion. Fans are left wondering if the third time will be the charm or if this season will end in disillusionment.
