RUVDS Explores Polar Frontiers With Data Centers

Company plans to extend internet infrastructure to the coldest places on Earth.

Russian hosting firm RUVDS is ambitiously pushing the boundaries of technology with their plans for extreme polar expeditions aimed at establishing reliable data centers at Earth’s coldest regions, including the North and South Poles. Following its recent venture at the Barneo Ice Camp near the North Pole, RUVDS has set its sight on Antarctica, testing the feasibility of high-speed data access and server performance under extreme weather conditions.

Earlier this year, RUVDS successfully deployed a "data center in a box" to Barneo, delivered via air drop from an Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft. This experiment focused on providing internet access and hosting capabilities on the ice. Although initial plans anticipated operational continuity for one month, the mission was cut short to just one week due to emergency evacuation necessitated by dangerous cracks forming beneath the ice. The results, nonetheless, were invaluable.

Building on this experimental foundation, the company has expressed determination to advance their project by launching their next server at the South Pole next year. Nikita Tsaplin, CEO of RUVDS, shared insights on the motivations behind these polar maneuvers. "We already have a successful experience of test launching a server at the North Pole - this was a kind of first approach to testing. And Antarctica, as a region with much more complex logistics and conditions, allows us to continue research at a new level," Tsaplin noted.

This upcoming Antarctic mission will implement lessons learned from Barneo, including enhanced insulation and backup power systems to defend against power failures—crucial for operations under such unpredictable environmental conditions. RUVDS will introduce uninterruptible power supplies, ensuring consistent operational output regardless of extreme temperatures. The aim is clear: create what Tsaplin describes as the ultimate "Antarctic data center" capable of functioning efficiently and resiliently.

An integral facet of this project is the connection itself. RUVDS has indicated they will facilitate data transmission via high-speed communication channels. While the details of the technology remain under wraps, it’s understood the infrastructure will stem from their earlier Arctic trials, which successfully utilized their StratoSat TK-1 satellite, launched in June 2023 alongside Russian aerospace firm Statonautica. This satellite operates as part of RUVDS's elaborate communication network, serving as the backbone to their data centers and enabling remote connectivity.

Despite the hiccup of memory damage during the satellite’s launch, the StratoSat TK-1 is still operational. It continues to transmit basic information—a sign of resilience and determination from the company aiming to cultivate reliable networks even within hazardous conditions.

RUVDS is currently evaluating options for delivering their Antarctic server. The engagement of specially-built transport planes and ships equipped for ice navigation forms part of their logistics strategy. Should the installation succeed, it would not only affirm RUVDS’s capabilities but could also pave the path for the establishment of more data centers within remote polar regions, revolutionizing scientific research opportunities and potentially transforming communication accessibility where it has largely been nonexistent.

Tsaplin elaborated on RUVDS’s broader goals: "...the possibility of establishing satellite communications, including high-speed channels, will be studied, and I do not rule out...a kind of beta test of commercial use of the server." This statement indicates not only the intention to innovate but also to leverage technology for practical, commercial viability even amid the harshest climates on Earth.

The commitment RUVDS has shown toward spearheading this polar expedition acknowledges both the potential and challenges of introducing tech infrastructure to extreme environments.
