PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers women's basketball team (11-19, 3-15 B1G) is set to continue its postseason adventure as they have received a first-round bye for the 27th Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The Scarlet Knights will face the winner of the clash between Army (24-7, 14-4 Patriot) and Bryant (17-14, 9-7 AE), scheduled to take place on Thursday, March 20, at 5 p.m. The location for Rutgers' second-round game remains to be determined, setting the stage for what promises to be exciting postseason action.
Head coach Coquese Washington expressed her enthusiasm about the opportunity, saying, "We are thrilled to continue our season by participating in the WNIT. Playing in March is really exciting, and it gives us a chance to gain valuable post-season experience. I'm especially happy for our seniors, as their college careers get to last a little longer."
The Rutgers team has impressive WNIT credentials, having made two appearances previously and achieving a remarkable 7-1 record overall. They last competed in the tournament in 2016 when they reached the second round, and their greatest success came in 2014 when they were crowned champions by defeating UTEP.
The WNIT is structured as follows: the first round runs from March 20-22, the second round from March 23-25, the Super 16 from March 26-28, the Great 8 from March 29-31, the Fab 4 on April 1-2, and the Championship game is set for Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 3 p.m. ET, broadcasted on CBS Sports Network.
Turning to Bryant, they also have high expectations as they received an automatic bid to the WNIT following their strong season. The Bulldogs concluded their campaign with a 17-14 record. They met Vermont last week, where they suffered a defeat, falling to the Catamounts 62-45 during the America East semifinals.
Bryant is set to host Army West Point on Thursday at 5 p.m., the outcome of which will determine who progresses to face off against Rutgers. The Bulldogs will look to capitalize on their historic postseason run, aiming for just their second time participating above and beyond the conference tournament. Bryant's only previous postseason experience came during the 2013-14 season when they competed in the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI), where they lost to Fairfield after two overtimes.
Regarding the matchup against Army, the two teams share a storied history, having met five times previously, with the Black Knights commanding the series at 4-1. Their last encounter took place back in December 2021, resulting in Army’s victory by 74-50.
The excitement surrounding March Madness is palpable as both teams prepare for their respective matchups, with high hopes illuminating both campuses of Rutgers and Bryant. By participating in this prestigious tournament, these teams have the chance to showcase their hard work and determination on the national stage.
