Russo Brothers Explore Games Based On Avengers Projects

Their desire for fresh narratives includes potential video game tie-ins with Marvel's Avengers films.

The Russo Brothers, renowned for their work on Marvel movies, have expressed enthusiasm about branching out with video game adaptations of the upcoming Avengers films, namely Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. With their new film The Electric State set to release on Netflix, the directing duo revealed their openness to exploring new dimensions within the expansive Marvel universe.

Joe and Anthony Russo, working under their production company AGBO, are not just focusing on film but also on interactive media. Recently, they collaborated with Netflix to develop The Electric State: Kid Cosmo, described as a narrative-driven puzzle game set prior to the events of their latest movie. “We would definitely be open to it,” Joe Russo stated during an interview with Variety, hinting at the potential of adapting stories for video games fringing on superhero realms.

Currently, the Russo Brothers are shifting their creative efforts toward establishing original intellectual properties (IP). Joe emphasized their excitement for this new path: “At AGBO, we want to tell new stories—with new characters and new worlds.” They aim to construct expansive universes akin to the Star Wars saga but in different genres. This ambition coincides with their involvement as executive producers for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, both of which are said to be shot back-to-back, starting filming in April 2025.

The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, premiering on May 1, 2026, promises to showcase an impressive ensemble cast, including Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, Chris Evans as Nomad, and Tom Holland reprising his role as Spider-Man. The film is set to explore themes of the multiverse, following Doctor Doom’s misguided quest to unify the universes under his control for their salvation, making it part of the grand conclusion of Marvel's Multiverse Saga.

Although the Russo Brothers look forward to the premiere of The Electric State, anticipation mounts for their Avengers films. They plan to shape the stories of their heroes through various mediums, aiming to blend traditional storytelling with modern gaming experiences. This innovative approach mirrors current trends, where franchises are increasingly leaning on multiple platforms to expand their narratives.

Meanwhile, The Electric State stars Millie Bobby Brown as Michelle, who navigates through the ruins of society accompanied by cartoon-inspired robots after a failed uprising. The film promises to showcase the Russo Brothers' flair for mixing emotional storytelling with stunning visuals.

Meanwhile, Kid Cosmo, the mobile prequel to The Electric State, aims to provide players with story-driven, bite-sized experiences. This intertwining of gaming with cinematic features aims to draw players and new audiences together, propelling varied forms of storytelling to center stage.

While several Marvel games are currently under development, none directly align with their cinematic universe as the Russo Brothers presume the time needed for game development is too lengthy to coincide with forthcoming movie timelines. Nevertheless, excitement remains as the brothers prepare to launch their upcoming titles, infusing creativity across storytelling platforms.

AVengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be one of Marvel's most anticipated projects. With numerous familiar faces returning and the addition of compelling new characters, fans are left eager to see how the Russo Brothers will redefine their universe. With the balance of traditional movies and interactive media weaving together, they have every intention of captivating audiences. “We currently have three worlds under development, each crafted at the scale of the Star Wars universe,” Joe Russo elaborated, hinting at the vast possibilities of storytelling the duo aspires to achieve.

With excellent prospects on the horizon, including the double-feature filming schedule, the Russo Brothers are undoubtedly at the forefront of reshaping fan experiences across multiple platforms. Their blend of bold storytelling, innovative approaches, and iconic characters keeps the public on edge, awaiting the next epic chapters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
