Russians Prepare For Unique May Holidays In 2025

The traditional long May holidays will be split into two event-filled blocks for a more structured celebration.

As May approaches, Russians are gearing up for a unique holiday experience in 2025, with the traditional long May holidays undergoing a significant transformation. This year, the holidays will last a total of eight days, but instead of one continuous stretch of time off, they will be divided into two concentrated blocks designed to enhance the holiday experience.

The first block will kick off on May 1st, coinciding with the international celebration of Spring and Labor Day, and will run through May 4th. This four-day period offers an opportunity for families and friends to enjoy the warmer weather, partake in outdoor activities, and perhaps even enjoy a barbecue. The second block will follow shortly after, from May 8th to May 11th, dedicated to Victory Day, a significant occasion for commemorating the sacrifices made during World War II.

According to the Ministry of Labor, this restructuring of the holiday calendar aims to create a more meaningful and organized celebration. The authorities believe that by splitting the holidays into two distinct phases, they can better preserve the festive atmosphere associated with each occasion and avoid the dilution of holiday spirit that can occur during longer breaks.

In preparation for these holidays, April 30th will be a shortened working day, allowing employees to wrap up their tasks early and kick off the celebrations. However, May 7th will not be a shortened day, as it precedes the Victory Day celebrations.

During the first block of holidays, Russians can expect to engage in various activities, from picnics in parks to short trips across the country. It’s an ideal time for spontaneous adventures, as the days are designed to encourage people to connect with nature and each other. The second block, which honors Victory Day, will be filled with parades, memorials, and events aimed at paying tribute to veterans and the historical significance of the day.

Interestingly, the new holiday format not only maintains the total number of days off but also aims to support domestic tourism. With shorter but more focused breaks, there is hope for a surge in interest in regional travel and cultural events, potentially benefiting local economies.

In total, May 2025 will feature 18 working days, as the month includes two short working weeks. The first week will run from April 28th to April 30th, with April 30th being a shortened day. After the first holiday block, workers will return to their jobs from May 5th until May 7th, before enjoying the second holiday block from May 8th to May 11th.

Despite the changes, the Ministry of Labor has emphasized that the overall number of holidays remains unchanged. This restructured schedule is viewed as a way to balance the interests of workers and employers while enhancing the significance and enjoyment of the holidays.

For those who might miss the extended breaks of previous years, it’s worth noting that the upcoming summer mini-vacation will take place from June 12th to June 15th, coinciding with Russia Day. This will provide another opportunity for relaxation and celebration shortly after the May holidays.

As the May holidays draw near, many Russians are encouraged to plan their activities in advance to make the most of this new format. Whether it’s enjoying the spring weather or participating in commemorative events, the upcoming holidays promise to be both engaging and meaningful.
