Russians Prepare For Extended May Holidays In 2025

The upcoming May holidays promise ample time for relaxation and celebration with two four-day weekends.

As May approaches, Russians eagerly anticipate a series of extended holidays that promise ample time for relaxation and celebration. In 2025, the May holidays will be divided into two distinct segments, providing eight days off in total, thanks to the observance of the Spring and Labor Day and Victory Day, along with the transfer of days off from other months.

The first segment of holidays will span from May 1 to May 4, coinciding with the Spring and Labor Day, which falls on a Thursday. The second segment will follow shortly after, from May 8 to May 11, in honor of Victory Day. This arrangement results in a total of 13 non-working days in May, as the month comprises 31 days, with 18 designated as working days.

April 30 will be a shortened working day, allowing employees to transition into the holiday spirit smoothly. According to Russian labor legislation, the non-working holidays in May are May 1 and May 9, which are significant dates in the Russian calendar.

The Spring and Labor Day, celebrated on May 1, has its roots deeply embedded in the labor movement. It is recognized globally under various names, including International Workers' Solidarity Day. The origins of this holiday trace back to 1886, when a massive strike occurred in Chicago, where workers demanded better working conditions, including a reduction of the working day from 15 hours to 8. In 1889, the Congress of the Second International declared May 1 as a day to honor these labor struggles.

In Russia, the first mass demonstration for this cause took place in 1897, and following the October Revolution in 1917, May 1 became an official holiday, emphasizing its importance in the socialist society. Although the political significance of May Day has diminished over the years, it remains a day for Russians to enjoy an extended break and celebrate labor.

Victory Day, observed on May 9, is another pivotal holiday that commemorates the victory over fascism in World War II. This day holds immense significance, not only in Russia but also in other countries that suffered during the war. May 9 was declared a public holiday in the Soviet Union until 1948, after which it was not officially recognized as a holiday for several years. However, in 1965, it regained its status as a day of celebration, marked by grand parades in Moscow's Red Square showcasing the might of the Russian army and its advancements in military technology.

Interestingly, while Russia celebrates Victory Day on May 9, many European countries commemorate it on May 8, the day Germany signed its capitulation. This dual observance serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during those tumultuous times.

The extended May holidays in 2025 are made possible by the transfer of days off from earlier months. Specifically, the holiday originally scheduled for January 4 has been moved to May 2, and the day off for Defender of the Fatherland Day, February 23, has been rescheduled to May 8. These adjustments, as explained by the Ministry of Labor, aim to optimize leisure time for workers, allowing for longer continuous breaks rather than sporadic days off.

For many Russians, the lengthy May holidays present an opportunity to escape the city and enjoy nature. Whether it's a picnic, hiking, or simply spending time outdoors, these holidays encourage people to embrace the beauty of spring. However, those venturing into the wilderness should be mindful of safety precautions, particularly regarding wildlife encounters. In certain regions, such as Sochi, animals like jackals and bears may pose risks, so it's advisable to avoid solitary excursions after dark and to secure food properly.

Additionally, some Russians maintain the tradition of using one of the May holidays for a thorough spring cleaning. This practice not only helps tidy up living spaces in preparation for the summer season but also symbolizes a fresh start, freeing oneself from the clutter of the past.

As May approaches, the excitement for these upcoming holidays is palpable. With a rich history and cultural significance behind both the Spring and Labor Day and Victory Day, these holidays offer a chance for Russians to reflect on their heritage while enjoying well-deserved rest. The combination of extended breaks, historical observances, and opportunities for outdoor activities makes May 2025 a month to look forward to for many across the nation.
