Russian Rapper Vitya Matanga Faces Investigation Over Insulting Lyrics

Public outcry leads to police probe after controversial song about Haiti.

Russian rapper Vitya Matanga, whose real name is Viktor Buchelnikov, is facing serious consequences due to the controversial lyrics of his latest track. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Prosecutor General's Office of Russia have launched investigations following complaints alleging the song contains derogatory remarks aimed at police officers.

On March 3, 2025, Andrei Zgonnikov, the chairman of the Council of Fathers of Russia and a former police officer himself, filed formal complaints with law enforcement agencies urging them to review Matanga’s lyrics. Zgonnikov expressed his discontent over the track, arguing, “The statements were submitted on March 3. I myself am a former police officer, my father worked throughout his life performing police duties, and my grandfather was military. Therefore, I find such expressions [in the lyrics] unacceptable and offensive.”

The lyrics came under scrutiny for what Zgonnikov categorizes as incitement to hatred and disrespect toward authority figures, violations of two significant criminal laws: the incitement of hatred or enmity, and the insult of public officials. Reports indicate Zgonnikov's deep concern for the way police are portrayed, especially as they are carrying out their duties, including participation in current military operations.

Vitya Matanga's controversial song is reportedly directed at the circumstances surrounding Haiti, and critics, including Zgonnikov, allege this has resulted in unacceptable insults to police officers. According to the Telegram channel Mash, the investigation initiated by the police, alongside the Prosecutor General’s Office, is currently evaluating the content of the track to assess its potential legal ramifications.

Should Matanga's guilt be established, he could face severe penalties, including imprisonment for up to six years. This situation has raised important questions about artistic expression and accountability, compelling many to ponder the balance between free speech and the respect due to law enforcement officials.

Zgonnikov has publicly demanded Matanga take responsibility for his words, calling for public apologies and revisions to the song's lyrics to mitigate the offense caused to the police force. The actions taken by Zgonnikov and other concerned citizens reflect growing unease over the portrayal of law enforcement within popular culture, particularly within music where language can evoke strong emotions.

While the investigation is underway, this incident serves as a pertinent reminder of the sensitive nature of artistic expression. It raises urgent discussions around the boundaries of expression and the respect owed to individuals serving as public servants. The outcome of this case could have significant repercussions for other artists and their works, especially those who deal with controversial subjects.

Public sentiment is mixed, with some expressing solidarity with law enforcement, echoing Zgonnikov's concerns, and others defending Matanga’s right to free speech. This division highlights the challenge society faces as they navigate the often murky waters of creativity and accountability.

Artists have long faced criticism for their content, but as this case showcases, the reach and impact of their work can lead to real-world consequences. The dialogue surrounding Matanga's track continues as many await the results of the investigation, and whether it will lead to legal action or perhaps set new precedents for artistic expression within music.
