Russian Railways (RZD) has announced significant changes to its passenger policies aimed at enhancing the travel experience for millions of commuters. Effective January 1, 2025, the new rules are part of RZD’s broader strategy to modernize services and improve passenger comfort, as well as to promote safety and respect among travelers on long-distance trains across Russia.
One of the most notable changes is the updated policy on transporting pets. Now, small animals can travel with their owners without the need to purchase all seats within their compartment, making it more convenient for pet owners. "Теперь мелких животных можно размещать в купе повышенной комфортности без затрат на выкуп всех мест," according to RZD sources. For larger pets, the existing rules remain—owners are required to purchase free tickets for their dogs if they intend to occupy the entire compartment. A significant benefit is the allowance of up to four large pets or carriers in each compartment, regardless of the occupied seating.
To keep pace with modern digital trends, RZD has also partnered with the popular online marketplace Wildberries to offer passengers the convenience of buying train tickets online. This collaboration is expected to alleviate long lines at railway stations and streamline the ticket purchasing process. By summer 2024, RZD plans to introduce services allowing passengers to book journeys even when full tickets on their full desired routes are unavailable. The system will utilize available seating on different segments of the train for their journeys.
Passengers can also expect improvements to their comfort during travel. RZD has focused on physical enhancements within train carriages. Features such as specially installed curtains for privacy have been introduced in sleeper cars, allowing travelers to create their own space. Feedback has indicated positive reception from passengers, who appreciate the relatively more private experience. Additional improvements include automatic bathroom doors, waste segregation bins, and even shower cabins, which are aimed at elevaging overall travel comfort.
Safety and tranquility aboard trains are also key focuses of the new regulations. There will now be stricter limitations on the use of electronic devices to maintain a peaceful atmosphere. Passengers are encouraged to use headphones for music or audiobooks and are urged to minimize loud conversations. RZD emphasizes the importance of creating a respectful environment, urging all passengers to show consideration for fellow travelers.
Dining services are receiving upgrades as well. RZD promises passengers access to more diverse and higher-quality meals available in restaurant cars. "Пассажиров ожидает более разнообразное меню и повышение качества предлагаемых блюд," says the announcement from RZD. Enhanced service quality is part of their commitment to improving the overall travel experience.
