Russia Proposes Ceasefire Resolution Amid Ongoing Ukraine Conflict

Negotiations progress as U.S. considers easing sanctions if agreement reached.

In a significant development regarding the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), stated that the UN Security Council could potentially draft and pass a resolution supporting a ceasefire between the two nations, contingent on the terms of the agreement. This statement comes in the wake of a resolution passed by the UN Security Council in February 2025, which was proposed by the United States and aimed at addressing the Russia-Ukraine crisis.

Nebenzya emphasized that the feasibility of reaching a ceasefire agreement would hinge on the specific terms and language used in any proposed resolution. He pointed out that, currently, a ceasefire seems impractical, as Ukraine has allegedly failed to adhere to prior agreements to halt attacks on energy infrastructure for a period of 30 days, as previously negotiated.

In light of these tensions, Russia has called on European nations to cease their military support for Ukraine and urged all parties involved to consider conditions that could pave the way for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov affirmed Russia's willingness to engage in dialogue and its commitment to pursuing a peaceful solution, while also stressing the need to protect national interests.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that negotiations between Ukraine and Russia are nearing their final stages. He cautioned against any attempts to exploit Washington's reconciliation efforts. The U.S. is also contemplating the possibility of easing sanctions on Russia, should a long-term ceasefire agreement be successfully negotiated.
