Russell Tops 2025 F1 Pre-Season Testing Timesheet

The final day of testing reveals strong performances from teams as new season approaches.

George Russell ended the final day of the 2025 Formula 1 pre-season testing at Bahrain on top of the timesheets, leading the pack with the fastest lap time of 1m29.545s for Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team.

With three days of rigorous testing from February 26 to 28 under their belts, all ten teams and their twenty drivers pushed their new cars through their paces. The importance of this event could not be understated, as it provided the first real glimpse of the competitive dynamics of the upcoming F1 season, which kicks off on March 16, 2025, in Melbourne.

Russell's closest challenger was Red Bull's reigning world champion, Max Verstappen, who posted a time of 1m29.566s and completed eighty-one laps. Following them, Alex Albon for Atlassian Williams Racing impressed by clinching third place with a time of 1m29.650s. McLaren's Oscar Piastri brought the team home fourth, underlining the team's impressive pace from the previous season, which saw them capturing the constructors' championship for the first time since 1998.

Fifth was Alpine's Pierre Gasly, whose performance indicated competitive improvements from last year. Lewis Hamilton secured sixth place for Ferrari, which marked significant developments for the Scuderia. Following Hamilton were Yuki Tsunoda of Visa Cash App Racing Bulls and Esteban Ocon from MoneyGram Haas F1 Team, placing seventh and eighth respectively.

Completing the top ten were Scuderia Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli, demonstrating the potential depth of talent across the grid. Despite being unwell, Aston Martin's Lance Stroll was temporarily replaced by teammate Fernando Alonso for the final segment of the testing.

The three-day testing period allowed teams to test their cars under what are considered race conditions. Engineers utilized aero rakes and flow-vis paint on the track to observe and verify the effectiveness of their aerodynamic concepts and changes.

All teams utilized this occasion to check their systems and gear up for the season. The information gleaned from these sessions is invaluable, as drivers can analyze tire wear, test various setups, and iron out any issues before the championship kicks off.

While final lap times might not directly indicate the competitive order due to differences in fuel loads and setups, the data collected signals which teams are resolved to lead the pack. McLaren, after last year’s success, came equipped with significant upgrades, yet every team was under scrutiny for performance.

Of special focus this year is Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari. Hamilton's transition from Mercedes to the Scuderia has raised eyebrows across the paddock. During testing, he expressed positive feedback on his new car, stating he felt “the most positive” entering the season compared to recent years. Hamilton's remarks reflect how he is adjusting to the SF-25, with improvements made to suspension and aerodynamics aired by the team as they strive to dismantle their championship drought.

Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz has raised concerns over F1’s testing rules, stating he felt uncomfortable with the limited time available to drivers before their first race. Having only had one and a half days of testing due to restrictions, he expressed solidarity with rookie drivers who face even tougher challenges coming to grips with their cars. Sainz proposed elevative changes to F1’s rules, advocating for more testing days over simulator days to offer teams and drivers necessary on-track experience.

Pre-season testing has become imperative for newcomers like Kimi Antonelli, Gabriel Bortoleto, Isack Hadjar, and Jack Doohan, who are among those making their full-time debuts this year. This opportunity serves as their initiation to Formula 1, and the results could markedly affect their confidence and adaptability.

Looking forward to the season opener, teams must prepare for the peculiar characteristics of the Albert Park track, which demands astute maneuvers and precise cornering. With impressive work ethic visible over testing week, the drivers and teams appear enthusiastic and eager to build upon their performances as they drive racing at speeds once again.

Overall, the 2025 preseason testing has shown promising results across teams, and with the competitive edge intensifying, expectations are skyrocketing for the upcoming season.
