Academy Award-winning actor Russell Crowe is set to bring action and drama to the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia, as production begins next month on his latest thriller, Bear Country. Directed by Derrick Borte, the film, which is based on Thomas Perry's novel Strip, features Crowe as Manco Kapak, a club owner whose plans to retire with his girlfriend are thrown off course when he falls victim to a robbery.
Scheduled to commence filming in February 2025, Bear Country will creatively transform the scenic landscapes of Queensland to replicate the streets of Los Angeles, the film's setting. This marks Crowe's return to the region following his work on Land of Bad in late 2022, reflecting his commitment to Australian cinema.
The production is anticipated to generate approximately $7.4 million (or A$11.9 million) for the Queensland economy, alongside creating around 95 jobs. Support from both the City of Gold Coast and the Australian government through their location offset program played a significant role in facilitating this project. "The Gold Coast’s incredible natural environment will shine in Bear Country when it conveniently doubles as Los Angeles," commented Arts Minister John-Paul Langbroek, showcasing the appeal of the region as a filming destination.
Set against the exciting backdrop of Crowe’s character’s challenging new reality, the narrative follows Manco Kapak as his serene retirement plans become increasingly unattainable after he is confronted by unexpected violence at his nightclub. Co-writing the script, Borte has teamed up with Daniel Forte, echoing their previous collaboration on American Dreamer.
Jacqui Feeney, CEO of Screen Queensland, noted the broader impact of Bear Country, emphasizing how projects like this can uplift local businesses and provide valuable job opportunities. “We expect the production to generate approximately $7.4 million for the local economy and create jobs for 95 people,” Feeney added, expressing optimism for the film's benefits on the regional economy.
The production team comprises notable figures, including Mark Fasano of Nickel City Pictures and Jeffrey Greenstein of A Higher Standard, with plans for the film’s rigorous execution and relatively quick production phase. While Bear Country currently does not have set release dates, it joins the lineup of Crowe's impressive body of work, which includes several projects recently completed or currently underway.
Last year alone, Crowe saw the release of five projects, demonstrating his versatility and dedication to the craft. While filming Bear Country takes place, Crowe is also involved with projects like Rothko, which delves deep within the life of the American painter, and the historical drama Nuremberg, which seeks to shed light on the post-war trials.
Fans of Crowe can look forward to more updates as filming progresses and the action thriller prepares for its debut. Supported by state agencies committed to uplifting local economy and artistry, Bear Country stands as yet another showcase of Crowe's Hollywood prowess, rooted firmly back within his Australian heritage.
