RTVE Play Dominates Free Streaming Market With Record Viewership

The platform finishes 2024 with over 11 million users and impressive engagement metrics.

RTVE Play has firmly established itself as the leading free streaming platform, marking 2024 as a year of significant growth and viewership success. Closing the year with 11.4 million unique users, RTVE Play has seen an increase of 1.6 million monthly users compared to 2023 and three million more than 2022. This remarkable rise is underscored by over 577.5 million total views on the platform, representing a 38% increase from the previous year.

One of the key factors behind RTVE Play’s success has been its compelling content offerings. The platform highlights two standout categories: film and sports, both of which have attracted enormous audiences. Film, for example, averaged 964,000 viewers per month over the year. This figure is particularly impressive, reflecting a growth of 25.6% from 2023, thanks largely to the inclusion of high-profile Hollywood movies previously exclusive to other platforms like Max or Netflix.

Following closely behind is the popular television show La Revuelta, hosted by David Broncano, which debuted in September 2024. By year-end, the program managed to pull in an average monthly audience of 960,000 viewers. Remarkably, the two flagship offerings of RTVE Play are just 4,000 viewers apart—a noteworthy achievement for La Revuelta, especially considering it was introduced only partway through the year. With these promising figures, it’s not unreasonable to predict continued success for the show as it builds on its audience base.

Not to be overlooked, RTVE Play’s series La Promesa also performed well, attracting a monthly average of 730,000 viewers. This series has consistently maintained viewer interest long after its premiere, contributing solidly to the platform’s overall success.

Another compelling aspect of RTVE Play’s growth is its prowess in broadcasting live events. The platform has experienced significant viewer engagement with its sports programming, reporting a 24% increase from 2023. The shift saw the average monthly viewership for live sports events climb from 3.3 million to 4.1 million. Much of this spike can be attributed to high-profile tournaments such as the Eurocup and the exciting matches of the Champions League final. These events not only garnered interest on the platform but also showcased the enduring popularity of sports programming.

Social media engagement has also skyrocketed, with RTVE’s various platforms achieving record-high numbers: over 8.571 billion views and 310 million interactions throughout 2024. This translates to 6.688 billion views for video content alone, marking a 56% increase compared to last year and doubling the views from 2022.

The success story of RTVE Play throughout 2024 signifies broader trends within the media industry, particularly as free streaming platforms become increasingly pivotal. The company’s strategic content decisions, coupled with the impressive uptake of its digital services, demonstrate the growing appetite among viewers for accessible and diverse programming.

Looking forward, industry analysts are closely watching how RTVE Play leverages its established base and rich catalog to maintain its competitive edge. With the continuation of key sports events and fresh programming slated for release, there’s high potential for the platform to sustain its upward momentum well beyond 2025. It seems clear: RTVE Play is not just participating in the streaming wars; it is rapidly becoming one of the leading contenders.
