Royal Navy Shadows Russian Task Group Near UK Waters

HMS Somerset monitors Russian naval activity transporting military hardware from Syria.

The Royal Navy has successfully executed a three-day operation to monitor Russian naval activity as it transited through UK waters. On March 1, 2025, HMS Somerset, a Type 23 frigate, engaged closely with the Russian Steregushchiy-class corvette Boikiy, which was tasked with escorting the merchant vessel Baltic Leader from Syria through the English Channel and North Sea.

Utilizing advanced sensors and radar systems, the HMS Somerset provided pivotal updates on the Russian task group’s movements throughout the operation. To gather aerial intelligence, the frigate launched its Merlin helicopter from 814 Naval Air Squadron, enhancing the surveillance capability and ensuring thorough monitoring of the Russian vessels.

During this operation, HMS Somerset coordinated efforts with UK maritime patrol aircraft and allied NATO forces, contributing to collective vigilance against potential threats. This operation follows closely on the heels of another significant event just over two weeks prior, where HMS Iron Duke, HMS Tyne, and RFA Tideforce tracked five Russian ships—three of which were merchant vessels—sailing from Syria toward a Russian Baltic port.

Commander Joel Roberts, the Commanding Officer of HMS Somerset, stated, “Somerset is well versed in the escort of Russian ships, having conducted these operations on many occasions. Great professionalism has been shown by the ship’s company to remain vigilant whilst operating in UK waters and integrating with our NATO allies to monitor Russian activity around Europe.” His comments highlight the commitment and readiness of the Royal Navy to engage with foreign naval operations effectively.

The operation commenced as the Russian corvette sailed south through the North Sea and English Channel. After rendezvousing with the Baltic Leader, which was reportedly transporting military hardware from the Russian naval base at Tartus, Syria, HMS Somerset maintained its surveillance, ensuring the security of UK territorial waters.

Reports indicate crew members on the Boikiy were seen burning papers and positioned at the ship’s machine guns, raising concerns about the nature of the cargo being transported. This detail sheds light on the intertwined dynamics of military logistics and monitoring practices undertaken by naval forces.

The HM Somerset’s persistent watch continued through the traffic separation scheme near Ushant, France, showcasing the naval vigilance aimed at ensuring safety and security amid rising geopolitical tensions. This operation marked the second occasion this year HMS Somerset was actively deployed to shadow Russian vessels, as earlier, it had successfully tracked the suspected Russian spy vessel Yantar alongside patrol ship HMS Tyne.

Reaffirming their commitment to maritime security, the Royal Navy’s actions demonstrate the importance of maintaining vigilance over international shipping lanes, especially as naval activities fluctuate amid the backdrop of global tensions. The integration of advanced technology and coordinated maritime operations exemplifies the proactive measures taken to monitor potential threats.

The need for careful navigation through these waters was underscored not only by the activities observed on the Russian ships but also by the overall mission undertaken during these operations. The British navy's preparedness to counter any perceived threat has been cemented through strategic planning and collaboration with NATO allies.

With the Baltic Leader escorted safely back to Russia, the HMS Somerset’s mission has exemplified the immense focus placed on maritime security and the comprehensive approach required to monitor suspicious activities effectively.

Going forward, the Royal Navy’s operational capability and readiness will remain under scrutiny as regional tensions persist. The strategic silhouette of naval forces plays a significant role not just for the UK but also for European security dynamics at large. This operation proves yet again the dedication of the Royal Navy to safeguard UK interests through diligent maritime operations.
