A sailor with the Royal Canadian Navy has died following a tragic incident during small-boat operations in Halifax's Bedford Basin on the night of January 24, 2025. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. local time when two sailors were operating a rigid-hull inflatable boat, which unfortunately capsized.
According to the Royal Canadian Navy, the Joint Rescue and Coordination Centre (JRCC) Halifax quickly coordinated rescue efforts. Two vessels from the Canadian Coast Guard were dispatched to the scene to assist. The sailors were successfully pulled from the water and brought to the Mill Cove jetty, where they were met by paramedics and transferred to the QEII Health Sciences Centre.
Regrettably, one of the sailors could not be resuscitated. Despite the best efforts of medical responders, the tragic outcome left colleagues and commanders deeply saddened. Commodore Jacob French, who commands the Canadian Fleet Atlantic, expressed the navy's grief, stating, "We are deeply saddened by the loss of our sailor.
