Rory Sutherland Calls For Recognition Of Octopus Energy Founder

Marketing expert urges the UK to celebrate innovative business leaders like Greg Jackson.

In a recent discussion, Rory Sutherland, the vice chairman of Ogilvy, has called for greater recognition of Greg Jackson, the billionaire founder of Octopus Energy, as a national hero for his innovative contributions to the energy sector. Sutherland lamented that the UK fails to celebrate its business successes in the same way the United States does, highlighting Jackson's ability to rethink the energy industry as a key factor in his praise.

Speaking on an upcoming episode of City AM's Boardroom Uncovered podcast, Sutherland expressed his admiration for Jackson, stating, "I'm very interested in people who have the capacity to rethink a business category. So Greg Jackson at Octopus Energy, in business terms, you know, Hannah Gibson at Ocado. I think it's tragic that in Britain we don't make more heroes of our really innovative business successes." He contrasted this with the American approach, where companies like Monzo, Wise, and Ocado are celebrated as national champions.

Jackson's Octopus Energy has recently achieved significant milestones, becoming the largest energy supplier in the UK, serving approximately 7.3 million households. This growth comes despite challenges, including a reported profit drop for the financial year ending April 30, 2024. According to City AM, Octopus Energy's profit fell to £83 million, down from £203 million the previous year, while its revenue also dipped slightly from £12.54 billion to £12.4 billion.

In a statement, Octopus Energy Group acknowledged that its UK energy retail business absorbed an additional £74 million in costs to help keep customer bills lower during the ongoing energy crisis and to support those most in need. Despite these financial hurdles, the company's non-UK retail customer base has tripled to 1.2 million, and its global workforce has expanded from 4,800 to 8,500.

In a related initiative aimed at promoting energy efficiency, Octopus Energy is offering cashback incentives to Lloyds Bank and Halifax customers who install heat pumps. Customers could be eligible for up to £2,000 cashback when opting for this eco-friendly heating solution. This initiative not only encourages the switch to renewable energy but also helps homeowners manage upfront costs and lower their long-term energy bills.

Heat pumps have emerged as one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly heating options available today. Unlike traditional boilers that burn fossil fuels, heat pumps extract heat from the air or ground and use electricity to warm homes. The benefits of heat pumps include a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by up to 60% compared to gas boilers, high efficiency—providing three to four times more heat energy than the electricity they consume—and year-round comfort, as they can both heat and cool homes.

The cashback offer is designed to make the transition to heat pumps more accessible. Homeowners can save significantly by combining the Octopus Energy cashback with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which provides an additional £7,500 to eligible applicants. This means that potential savings on a new heat pump installation can reach up to £9,500.

To qualify for the cashback, applicants must be customers of Lloyds Bank or Halifax, with an active mortgage, loan, savings, investment, or insurance product. The installation must be carried out by Octopus Energy, and the offer is currently available only in England, Scotland, and Wales. Tenants are not eligible unless they own the property where the heat pump is installed.

Claiming the cashback is straightforward. Customers must first confirm their eligibility, request a quote from Octopus Energy for a heat pump, and optionally apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Once approved, Octopus Energy will schedule the installation, which typically takes a few days. After installation, the cashback will be credited to the customer's account within 30 days.

Despite some common myths surrounding heat pumps—such as their effectiveness in cold weather and concerns over noise—modern heat pumps are designed to function efficiently even in freezing temperatures, with some models operating down to -25°C. They produce noise levels comparable to a modern refrigerator, making them suitable for residential use.

As the UK continues to navigate the complexities of the energy market, the recognition of innovative leaders like Greg Jackson and initiatives like the Octopus Energy cashback offer may play crucial roles in shaping a sustainable future. With Jackson's vision and the push for renewable energy solutions, the UK could potentially redefine its approach to energy and innovation.

As Octopus Energy continues to grow and adapt to market challenges, it remains to be seen how the company will further influence the energy landscape in the UK and beyond. The combination of innovative leadership and supportive initiatives could pave the way for a more sustainable and economically viable energy future for millions of households.
