Rondônia Launches Integrated Traffic Management Forum And Maio Amarelo Campaign

The I Fórum Integrado para Gestão de Trânsito aims to enhance road safety and awareness in the state.

On April 30, 2025, the government of Rondônia is set to host the I Fórum Integrado para Gestão de Trânsito at the Teatro Palácio das Artes in Porto Velho. This pioneering event aims to enhance the integration of key pillars essential for road safety: education, traffic engineering, and enforcement. Organized by the Departamento Estadual de Trânsito (Detran-RO) and the Escola Pública de Trânsito (EPTran), the forum is expected to draw around 500 participants, including mayors from all 52 municipalities, enforcement agents, public and private institutions, universities, and various agencies involved in road safety and urban mobility.

Rondônia's Governor, Marcos Rocha, emphasized the importance of implementing integrated management policies that bring together managers from diverse sectors. "The I Fórum Integrado para Gestão de Trânsito is an opportunity to establish agreements, propose partnerships, and align goals aimed at the collective objective of preserving life," he stated.

In addition to discussing public policies related to traffic safety, the event will mark the official launch of the Maio Amarelo movement, reinforcing the state's commitment to preserving life on the roads. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 3,500 people die daily in traffic accidents worldwide, highlighting a severe public health issue. "The event arises from the urgent need to reduce the number of accidents, injuries, and fatalities on public roads," Sandro Rocha, Detran-RO's director-general, noted.

The forum will feature lectures and a roundtable discussion covering topics such as shared responsibility in traffic, fostering a culture of peace on public roads, speed limits, and risk factors like alcohol consumption and improper use of safety equipment. Among the confirmed speakers is Sirlei Kuiava, coordinator of Training and Education for Traffic at the National Traffic Department (Senatran). Fábio Duarte, director of EPTran, added, "Responsibility in traffic lies with everyone: those who design, enforce, educate, and also those who use the roads. This forum is an important step toward strengthening this awareness and saving lives."

Following the forum, on May 1, 2025, the government of Rondônia, in collaboration with public and private institutions, will launch the first mega action of the Maio Amarelo campaign. This year's theme, "Desacelere. Seu bem maior é a vida" (Slow down. Your greatest asset is life), encourages reflection on the impact of human actions on traffic safety. The campaign aims to engage the population in reducing accidents and fatalities on the roads.

The Maio Amarelo campaign will kick off at Parque do Abobrão in Porto Velho, starting at 3:00 PM. The event will include a time tunnel exhibition showcasing the history of automobiles and Maio Amarelo, along with shows and a raffle of bicycles and other prizes. Various partners, including the Air Base of Porto Velho (BAPV), the Military Fire Brigade of Rondônia (CBMRO), the Civil Police of Rondônia (PCRO), and the Military Police of Rondônia (PMRO), will also participate and present services aimed at the public.

Fábio Duarte emphasized that even after Maio Amarelo, where efforts will be concentrated on raising awareness of traffic safety, educational actions will continue throughout the year. "Every day, we need to remind ourselves that life is worth more than a few minutes in traffic," he remarked.

The Maio Amarelo campaign will feature a series of activities throughout May, including the Amar&Laço educational actions focused on traffic safety awareness. These will involve lectures in companies, public and private institutions, and educational establishments, as well as visits to local markets to mobilize and promote Maio Amarelo.

Key events include the "Mobilidade Humana, Responsabilidade Humana" action in Ariquemes on May 2 at 6:00 PM, a cycling tour in Ouro Preto do Oeste on May 3 at 4:00 PM, and a simultaneous action in Jaru in partnership with the Barco Cross boat competition on the same day at 6:00 PM. Other activities will be held in Ji-Paraná, São Miguel do Guaporé, and Cacoal, among others, throughout the month.

The campaign will culminate on May 25 with a "Dia D," featuring simultaneous actions across all municipalities in Rondônia. Additionally, the Passarela do Espaço Alternativo will be illuminated in yellow throughout May to further raise awareness about the importance of cautious driving.

Maio Amarelo originated as an international movement initiated by the National Observatory of Traffic Safety (ONSV) in May 2014, coinciding with the month when the United Nations established the first Decade of Action for Road Safety. This initiative aims to stimulate participation from the public, businesses, governments, and organizations in discussions and developments aimed at creating safer and more humane traffic conditions. The movement has gained traction and is now recognized as a priority campaign incorporated into the resolutions of the National Traffic Council (Contran), which establishes annual educational campaigns.

As the I Fórum Integrado para Gestão de Trânsito and the Maio Amarelo campaign commence, the government of Rondônia is taking significant steps toward enhancing road safety and fostering a culture of responsibility among all road users. The focus is not just on reducing traffic accidents but on instilling a long-term commitment to safer mobility practices.
