Ron Brandsteder Passes Away, André Van Duin Remembers

A deep friendship and shared laughter shaped the legacy of the beloved television presenter, celebrated by colleagues and fans alike.

Ron Brandsteder, beloved Dutch television presenter, passed away recently, prompting heartfelt remembrances from close friend and fellow entertainer André van Duin.

André van Duin, known for his own long-running career on television, shared his sorrow with the ANP, stating, "I had so much fun with Ron. I only keep good memories of him." The duo, who collaborated extensively on various shows, enjoyed more than just a professional relationship—they were also dear friends.

"We went on vacation together and celebrated each other’s birthdays. He was a cherished friend," André reminisced, highlighting the bond they formed through years of shared laughter and camaraderie.

Ron Brandsteder, who was 74 years old at the time of his death, was well known for hosting popular shows like Ron's Honeymoonquiz, Laat ze maar lachen, and Wie ben ik?. André recalled their last meeting just three months ago at Brasserie Keyzer, near the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. "He was fond of shrimp croquettes, and we reminisced about everything from family to his passions. Ron was also fond of motorcycles and football, but I couldn't engage much on those topics," Van Duin noted with humor.

Brandsteder's declining health was something André had sensed. He revealed, "We all knew Ron was unwell, even if he was somewhat vague about it. His call to say goodbye came when I was having breakfast in Alicante. He told me we probably wouldn’t see each other again, which prepared me somewhat for this day." This last conversation, charged with emotion, proved difficult for both friends.

Describing Brandsteder as "a man with instructions for use, not always accessible to everyone," André emphasized their strong relationship, asserting, "I never felt any tension with him. It was simply enjoyable, and admiration was mutual," reflecting the respect they had for each other.

André van Duin expressed his deep appreciation for their long-standing friendship, saying, "He was not the same Ron anymore. He was glum about it. I will miss him deeply. I was prepared for it, but it’s still very hard."

The outpouring of grief from the entertainment community was palpable, with colleagues and friends offering their condolences and sharing memories. Popular presenter Wendy van Dijk referred to Brandsteder's passing as "a great loss," and fellow entertainer Patrick Martens expressed his sorrow on Instagram, stating, "You will be greatly missed." Ron's ex-wife, Patty Brard, also shared her grief, reminiscing about their time together, "What incredibly sad news this morning. Unfortunately, Ron passed away far too early. I wish his family, friends, and dear ones much strength and 'remember the good times.'"

André reflected on Ron's impact not only on his life but on countless viewers who grew up with him on television. "Many people grew up with him. A program like Showbizzquiz was legendary at the time. He was almost always at the studio, either for his own show or supporting others. We were part of a big TV family, and we had such close ties as colleagues," he said.

Van Duin characterized Ron Brandsteder as "a cheerful and smiling presenter" who radiated joy wherever he went. He compared him to James Dean, calling him charming and stating, "He won over the audience as a quizmaster, but he was also much more than just a host. When Ron was around, there was always joy and laughter. I will miss him terribly."

Indeed, Ron Brandsteder’s contribution to Dutch television will not be forgotten. He leaves behind not just his work but also memories cherished by both his friends and fans. All around, the remembrance of Ron’s life and legacy continues, bringing both sorrow and gratitude for the light he brought to many.
