Romanian Navy Set For Major Modernization

The Ministry of National Defense plans to acquire new vessels, drones, and upgrade existing assets to bolster maritime capabilities.

The Romanian Ministry of National Defense (MApN) is taking significant steps to modernize its naval forces with plans to acquire new maritime technology and vessels. This year, the ministry intends to purchase maritime patrol vessels, drones, and tugs to bolster the capabilities of the Romanian Naval Forces, according to MApN representatives.

Looking forward to 2025, the modernization efforts will focus not only on maritime assets but also on riverine capabilities. MApN is committed to continuing its "Mine Hunter" program and is eyeing the procurement of various new assets, including emergency intervention vessels, tugs, portable air-defense systems (MANPAD), and unmanned aerial systems (V-BAT). The plans also call for upgrading current vessels such as minesweepers, frigates, missile carriers, and support ships equipped for underwater rescue and rescue operations with divers.

Currently, MApN is involved with over 70 active procurement programs across different military categories, including ground forces, air forces, naval forces, and special operations forces. Among these programs, 30 contracts are already underway.

To facilitate these enhancements, there is also activity surrounding the initiation of procedures for establishing 10 new procurement programs by the end of 2025. These efforts highlight Romania's commitment to strengthening its defense posture.

One key aspect of this modernization plan includes recent decisions from the U.S. Government, which approved the delivery of three PATRIOT missile systems to Romania. This approval is seen as important for reinforcing Romania's air defense capabilities, with the Romanian government set to cover only the transport and likely VAT costs associated with receiving this equipment.

MApN representatives have noted, "The Romanian Government will only cover the transportation and, most likely, VAT costs for this equipment," emphasizing the collaborative nature of defense spending within NATO.

The focus on upgrading and modernizing the naval forces reflects broader strategic concerns and commitments within the NATO alliance. Romania's decision to invest significantly in new technologies and vessels is underscored by the enduring regional tensions, particularly those related to security challenges posed by Russia.

Overall, the modernization of the Romanian Naval Forces is not just about acquiring new vessels; it's about ensuring the country's military readiness for future challenges. MApN’s comprehensive plan promises to create stronger maritime and riverine operations, which are increasingly pivotal in the face of geopolitical uncertainties.

These efforts are poised to forge stronger ties with NATO partners and stabilize Romania's stature within the alliance, securing its maritime borders and enhancing operational capabilities across both sea and rivers.
