Rohingya Refugees Demand Safe Return Amid Rising Violence

International intervention is needed as tensions escalate between the Arakan Army and Myanmar's military government.

Recent developments concerning the Rohingya crisis reveal the dire conditions faced by thousands of refugees, who continue to call for international aid and the right to safely return to their homeland. Over 60,000 Rohingya have fled to camps in Bangladesh due to growing violence from the Arakan Army amid the precarious state of Myanmar's military governance, complicATING their plight.

On December 26, 2024, Rohingya refugees gathered for a rally at Lambashia 1-East Camp in Kutupalong, urging repatriation to Myanmar with safety guarantees. Attended by at least 100,000 participants, the event highlighted the desperate circumstances faced by those who fled their homes to escape decades of oppression, which they likened to being “birds in a cage.” The rally was organized by the youth group “Islami Mahasa” and emphasized the need for urgent international intervention to facilitate repatriation.

Rohingya leaders took the stage, voicing their commitment to return home if the Myanmar government meets their demands for safety and rights. Mohammad Zubair, one such leader, stated, "Rohingya are ready to return to Rakhine (Arakan) in Myanmar. If the Myanmar government accepts our demands, we will go back." He emphasized the role of international support, particularly from the United Nations and the Bangladeshi government, to assist the repatriation process.

Numerous Rohingya Muftis and scholars also held gatherings throughout the camps, voicing their desire for unity among their community. Famed figures such as Dil Mohammed and Abdul Rahim echoed sentiments of readiness to return to their homeland. Mohammed Jubair, President of the Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights, described the assemblies as peaceful expressions of yearning for their rights, stating, "Returning to Myanmar is our right as citizens, and we call upon the international community to support us in reclaiming our homeland."

Compounding these issues, reports have surfaced pointing to the rising influence of the Arakan Army, sparking fears of increased violence and displacement. Both national and international observers noted the military's alleged retrenchment from regions traditionally under its control, leaving Rohingya populations vulnerable to attacks. With the rebel group's growing power, clashes have been reported among various Rohingya armed factions, adding another layer of complexity to the already gruesome situation.

India remains on alert as these developments intensify. Concerns have been raised about the potential influx of Rohingya migrants across its borders, with India's Ministry of External Affairs actively monitoring the unrest. Achieving stability within Myanmar is imperative; any spillover risks exacerbation of tensions within India's northeastern states. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal articulated, "We are keeping a close watch on the developments in Myanmar. Our position is clear; all stakeholders must engage to restore peace and democracy."

Despite diplomatic efforts, security sources warn of potential threats from advanced weaponry reaching rebel groups. This influx could stoke violence both within Myanmar and along India's border regions, leading to heightened security concerns. The dynamic remains precarious as the Arakan Army continues to strengthen its grip on Rakhine State, controlling approximately 45 out of 70 towns, as reported by international media.

The Rohingya refugee situation is more than just a humanitarian crisis; it carries significant geopolitical weight, affecting relationships between Myanmar and its neighbors, particularly India. With the international community's involvement and the celebration of grassroots efforts among the Rohingya, there remains hope for securing rights and paving the way for sustainable peace. The demands for safe repatriation echo not only the stories of suffering but also the enduring resilience of those caught within this conflict.

Rohingya leaders have called for justice to be served for past atrocities, underlining the importance of recognizing their plight as historically rooted struggles rather than contemporary challenges alone. They insist on the necessity of citizenship rights to prevent such displacements from reoccurring.

The call for urgent international action is becoming increasingly urgent as changes continue to unfurl rapidly within Rakhine State. The Rohingya, caught between humanitarian despair and geo-political shifts, await the world's response.
