Rocket Engine Explosion Disrupts Shetland Space Launch

No injuries reported after dramatic test failure at SaxaVord Spaceport as UK space ambitions continue to grow

A rocket engine exploded during a launch test at SaxaVord Spaceport, located on the remote island of Unst, Shetland, on Monday evening. The test, conducted by the German company Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA), showcased the ambitious plans for the UK’s burgeoning space industry.

The test was part of multiple trials aimed at progressing toward the UK’s first vertical rocket launch. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and RFA reassured the public by stating the launch pad had been "saved and is secured" following the incident.

A massive fireball erupted from the rocket, with large flames and plumes of smoke spewing out horizontally prior to engulfing the entire structure. This unfortunate event occurred just three months after the site successfully completed its first rocket test.

During the prior test, RFA's engines roared for eight seconds before being shut down, marking it as the first operational launch for SaxaVord. The spaceport, which recently gained approval from the Civil Aviation Authority to begin orbital launches this year, aims to support up to 30 launches annually for satellite deployment.

RFA emphasized the need for such test campaigns, noting, "test campaigns are intended to identify issues before advancing to the next phase." The spokesperson also highlighted the industry's dedication to safety protocols, stating the site was evacuated before the test, ensuring no personnel were put at risk.

Historic for being the first fully-licensed spaceport capable of vertical launches in Western Europe, SaxaVord Spaceport has been crafting its reputation since acquiring the site as part of previous eco-tourism plans by co-owners Frank and Debbie Strang 15 years ago. Now, the focus lies on commercial spaceflight as the UK seeks to establish its place within the international space market.

With the space industry estimated at £17.5 billion, supporting nearly 49,000 jobs across about 2,200 firms, SaxaVord is among several proposed spaceports aimed at launching rockets from Scottish soil. Companies like HyImpulse and Edinburgh-based Skyrora have already expressed interest, lining up for future operations at the site.

Despite this setback, enthusiasm for space exploration remains high among both the public and private sectors. The plans to potentially send satellites and other payloads to orbit highlight the growing tech and innovation culture flourishing from Shetland’s scenic backdrop.

Comparatively, the Cornwall Spaceport previously garnered attention as the UK’s first licensed spaceport, albeit using aircraft to carry rockets for horizontal launches. The dream of launching rockets vertically from Scottish soil is now one step closer, albeit with plenty of hurdles to clear.

Other spaceports under consideration include the one at Sutherland, which dreams of launching multiple rockets each year, and proposals from Glasgow Prestwick and Machrihanish, both hoping to secure their place within the space race as horizontal launch candidates.

Looking forward, SaxaVord officials aim to collaborate closely with RFA to investigate the cause of the explosion and incorporate any necessary changes moving forward. This incident serves not only as a learning opportunity but as proof of the excitement and unpredictability of venturing beyond our planet.

The SaxaVord Spaceport holds promises filled with potential as space exploration gains momentum globally. With ambitions stretching limits, the hope remains strong for the future of vertical launches from Scotland's shores.
