Rochdale Drug Dealer Jailed For Ten Years

A shocking discovery of firearms, drugs, and over 800 exotic birds revealed the extent of criminal activities at local pet shop owner's property

Authorities were taken aback when they uncovered a shocking array of illegal activities at the home of Zak Dearden, 36, known for his seemingly innocuous pet shop venture. The site, referred to as "The Pen," located on Dyehouse Lane, Rochdale, turned out to be the epicenter of drug manufacturing, firearms possession, and the bizarre breeding of exotic birds.

The revelations began to unfurl on July 27, 2023, when police initially arrived at Dearden's large property, expecting to execute a drug-related search. Over fifty officers were mobilized for what turned out to be one of the most extensive operations undertaken by Greater Manchester Police (GMP). Detective Sergeant Steven Gilliland remarked, "This was the biggest search I have ever been involved in," emphasizing the challenges posed by the vast area of land, multiple buildings, and the condition of the premises.

A month-long search ensued, during which the police discovered 10 kilograms of amphetamines valued at approximately £100,000, along with 99 grams of cannabis oil, £57,000 worth of cannabis, and nearly £4,700 worth of cocaine. They also recovered five firearms, including revolvers and shotguns, accompanied by ammunition. This contraband was stashed throughout the property, which included containers and outbuildings.

Among the bizarre findings were over 800 parrots, as well as other exotic animals including dogs, peacocks, mink, ferrets, and Koi carp. The sheer number of parrots was staggering, and their removal required the expertise of animal care professionals. Dearden's father took custody of the animals after the search was concluded.

The police operation didn't just stop at the birds and firearms. Investigators also found evidence pointing to the manufacturing of drugs, including complex equipment and hazardous chemicals. Det. Sgt. Gilliland noted, "Hazardous chemicals had to be disposed of by chemical disposal experts, showcasing the level of danger present at the site." This was not only about illicit substances but also involved the welfare of countless animals, many of whom lived under terrible conditions.

During the search, authorities reported finding dogs "living in their own filth" within the premises. Following the shocking discovery, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) was called to assist, resulting in the removal of the neglected pets. Two of these dogs found refuge at the Dogs Trust, with additional placements coordinated by Leigh Dogs and Cats Home.

With the vast scale of illegal operations exposed, Dearden was arrested, charged, and eventually pled guilty to multiple charges, including drug possession and firearms offenses. He shared a list of troubling accusations reflecting his extensive criminal activities, granting him 10 years behind bars as sentenced by Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.

Prosecutor Alex Beevers explained, "The discoveries at The Pen were beyond what anyone could have imagined. Officers found drugs concealed within everyday items, evidencing the lengths Dearden went to stock his supplies unnoticed." The intensive police investigation revealed not only products for illegal sale but also highlighted the disturbing treatment of animals on his property.

The entire case has raised discussions within the Rochdale community about the extent of wildlife and drugs-related crime. Former pet shop owners had not only provided exotic birds to the local area but also operated under the guise of legality, which made the criminal undertakings all the more shocking.

Even as the legal proceedings wrapped up, the community is left grappling with the aftermath of Dearden’s illicit empire. Residents expressed frustration over the ease with which such operations can exist unnoticed and called for stricter regulations and enforcement.

Today, the courtroom sketches play witness to the confluence of drugs, animals, firearms, and deception, leaving many to ponder how authorities can effectively combat such convoluted crime networks. With both community safety and animal welfare compromised, the hope is for rigorous monitoring moving forward, ensuring Rochdale can avoid similar incidents and restore peace of mind among its residents.
