Robin Van Persie Named New Feyenoord Head Coach

The former striker returns to lead his hometown club as they aim to regain top form.

Robin van Persie has been appointed as the new head coach of Feyenoord, returning to the club where his professional career began. The announcement, made on February 23, 2025, follows the decision to part ways with former coach Brian Priske after disappointing results left the team significantly behind the league leaders.

The 41-year-old Van Persie, who previously managed SC Heerenveen, signed a contract with Feyenoord extending until 2027. He described the appointment as special, stating, “Everyone knows how special my bond with Feyenoord is.” This strong connection played a significant role in the club's decision to bring him back.

Van Persie's playing career was closely tied to Feyenoord. He started and finished his impressive career at the Rotterdam club, amassing 46 goals over 122 appearances. His time also included stints at prestigious clubs like Arsenal, Manchester United, and Fenerbahçe.

During his earlier coaching career, Van Persie worked with various youth teams at Feyenoord and served as assistant coach under Dick Advocaat before taking charge at SC Heerenveen. His tenure there included highlights such as defeating the then-league leaders PSV Eindhoven but was overshadowed by severe defeats, including one against AZ Alkmaar.

Upon returning to Feyenoord, he has expressed enthusiasm for his role: “I am enormously looking forward, together with a strong staff, to working with the player group at 1908 and then in De Kuip, supported by the Legion, playing matches and achieving successes together.” Despite facing challenges with his former club, he is determined to implement his vision of offensive and intense football.

The Feyenoord management shared their excitement about Van Persie's return. Dennis te Kloese, the general manager, emphasized the natural fit between Van Persie's experience and the club's aspirations. “We are very pleased to appoint a true club icon as the new coach of Feyenoord,” te Kloese noted, praising Van Persie's deep knowledge of the club and his capability to drive results.

Currently, Feyenoord is positioned third in the Eredivisie, trailing Ajax by 11 points. The club's performance this season has been shaky, with only one win in their last six league matches, but they recently accomplished the milestone of reaching the round of 16 in the Champions League for the first time. They will face Inter Milan next month.

Van Persie's immediate challenge will be to inspire his team and utilize his coaching skills effectively to improve their league standing. His first game as head coach will take place on March 1 against NEC Nijmegen, which adds extra pressure as he seeks to secure his first win.

Feyenoord fans are eager to see how the former player translates his decorated playing career and tactical knowledge onto the coaching pitch. With Van Persie at the helm, Feyenoord hopes to regain its competitive edge both domestically and in European competitions.
