Roberta Flack Passes Away At 88, Leaving Enduring Legacy

The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter is remembered for her soulful mastery and impactful contributions to music and culture.

Roberta Flack, the iconic voice behind classics like "Killing Me Softly with His Song," has passed away at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most celebrated singer-songwriters of her time.

Born on February 10, 1937, in Black Mountain, North Carolina, Flack's musical talent was evident from an early age. She received a full scholarship to Howard University at just 15 years old, where she honed her craft as both a pianist and singer. After graduating with her degree in music education, she taught music and English at H.B. Sugg High School before fully committing to her music career.

Flack’s professional ambitions took flight when she was discovered performing at Mr. Henry’s, a jazz club on Pennsylvania Avenue, during her time as a schoolteacher. According to Cathy Nagy, the general manager of the club, the venue played a pivotal role in Flack's rise to fame. "He wanted to help her do [music], and it took off from there," Nagy said.

Her career blossomed with the release of songs like "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," which became the top-selling single of 1972 and won her the Grammy for Record of the Year. Flack made history by becoming the first artist to win this award consecutively, earning it again for "Killing Me Softly with His Song" in 1974. This remarkable feat wasn't achieved again for nearly 30 years.

Despite her incredible success, Flack faced personal challenges as well. She was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2022, which tragically robbed her of her singing voice. A statement released by her representatives noted, "The disease has made it impossible to sing and not easy to speak." Roberta passed away peacefully on February 24, 2025, surrounded by her family.

Following the announcement of her death, tributes poured in from across the music industry. Radio personality Karen Clark from Foxy 107/104 remarked, "This is really a day for us to stop and reflect on an incredible talent... A woman who won five Grammys and was so incredibly talented as a classically trained pianist... it’s really a great day for us to honor her legacy."

Dionne Warwick, another music luminary, shared her heartfelt sorrow over Flack’s passing, encouraging fans to “rest in peace and receive the loving award the Heavenly Father has for her.” Meanwhile, Jennifer Hudson noted the importance of Flack's impact, stating, "One of the great soul singers of all time. Rest well, Ms. Flack. Your legacy lives on!!!"

Flack's influence transcended generations. Howard University, her alma mater, recognized her as one of their most impactful alumna. Valerie Eichelberger, Associate Professor at Howard, stated, “She wasn’t part of the current generation, but still they hear her music... it doesn’t have an endpoint.” Flack's contributions to music have left an indelible mark across cultural landscapes.

Flack’s commitment to social causes extended beyond music. She founded the Robert Flack Foundation to promote animal welfare and music education, solidifying her role as not only an artist but also as an activist for positive change.

Even as times changed and musical trends shifted, Flack’s artistry maintained its essence. Flack was known for her soulful interpretations and unique vocal delivery, which earned her numerous accolades including 14 Grammy nominations and five wins. Throughout her career, she broke boundaries and records, influencing countless artists who followed.

Rev. Al Sharpton also paid tribute, emphasizing her legacy as both a musician and activist. He wrote, "Roberta Flack was one of the greatest musicians and vocalists of all time. Her contributions to American culture and her activism will be remembered. Her music will live on forever."

Roberta Flack’s music carried emotional depth, and her performances were filled with the same grace and beauty she exuded off stage. Her songs are timeless classics, echoing the sentiments of love and longing, inspiring both her contemporaries and generations to come.

Her death marks the end of an era, but as the music community mourns, it also celebrates her legacy. From the classrooms she once taught to the biggest stages around the world, Roberta Flack has left behind not just songs, but heartfelt connections through her music.
