Rivian Expands Charging Network To All Electric Vehicles

Rivian's Joshua Tree Charging Outpost opens doors to non-Rivian EVs, enhancing accessibility

Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer known for its R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV, is branching out its operations with the opening of its first charging station to non-Rivian electric vehicles. The new Joshua Tree Charging Outpost, located at 61142 29 Palms Highway, Joshua Tree, California, aims to create greater accessibility for electric vehicle (EV) users.

This move mirrors similar actions by Tesla, which has opened its Supercharger stations to other EV brands to expedite the development of public charging infrastructure. Rivian’s founders expressed their motivation as not only part of its business strategy but also as an effort to promote the adoption of electric vehicles and facilitate travelers on their adventures.

According to RJ Scaringe, founder and CEO of Rivian, "To achieve widespread electrification, you also need a really good charging network. Now, we’re excited to bring the Rivian Adventure Network — with its ease of use and exceptional reliability — to other EV drivers around North America, investing in a future where charging on the road will be simple, sustainable, and convenient." This reflects Rivian's vision of creating easy access to charging for all, regardless of the vehicle make.

The Joshua Tree Charging Outpost features 12 charging stations capable of delivering rapid charging up to 900 volts. Drivers of non-Rivian vehicles can charge by using the Rivian app, which simplifies the payment process. The site also provides comforts like complimentary coffee from Joshua Tree Coffee Company, lounge areas with hammocks and cabanas, and even amenities for children, including a climbing wall.

This launch is timely as Rivian expands its infrastructure. The company expected to open additional charging locations throughout states like Texas, Colorado, Illinois, Montana, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and New York by the end of the year.

Among the incentives leading to this decision is the recent announcement from the Biden administration's Department of Energy, which included plans for significant financial backing to Rivian for their operations. Just last month, the department unveiled a $6.6 billion loan to assist Rivian Automotive as they build out their manufacturing capabilities.

Rivian noted the chargers installed at Joshua Tree are compliant with the design and siting criteria needed to secure various federal and state infrastructure funding. The additional financial support will enable Rivian to continue its charging network expansion efforts. This is particularly important as more traditional automobile manufacturers pivot to EVs, increasing the demand for charging stations across the nation.

Currently, Rivian maintains around 100 stations as part of its Adventure Network; most have made it friendly for Rivian users with dedicated software to enforce exclusive usage. Yet, with this new initiative, Rivian is set to retrofit its existing stations with new software, making them accessible to all EV brands.

Rivian’s move signals a larger transformation within the electric vehicle market—one where collaboration and interoperability between different manufacturers’ charging infrastructures could become the norm. The charging hardware utilizes the Combined Charging System (CCS), which is widely accepted across numerous EV brands except Tesla, which has its proprietary charging technology.

What remains to be seen is how quickly Rivian can implement its ambitions across its full network, and how effective this strategy will be for users of non-Rivian vehicles. Since the launch of its vehicles, Rivian has positioned itself as not just another player but as someone who aims to redefine electric vehicle ownership and the overall experience of EV driving.

For drivers seeking convenience and reliability, the Joshua Tree Charging Outpost is just the beginning of Rivian’s efforts to become inclusive within the EV community. Whether this translates to profitability or greater market share for Rivian remains to be observed, but it undoubtedly opens doorways for collaboration and shared infrastructure within the rapidly growing electric vehicle ecosphere.
