Kitakyushu City is buzzing with excitement as the Riverwalk Kitakyushu shopping complex prepares for its grand reopening on March 19, 2025, following major renovations. The changes were previewed to the media on March 18, marking the first significant update since the facility opened its doors back in 2003.
The revitalization focuses on the cinema building's first and second floors, which are set to welcome visitors with 21 new stores, including the city's first pet shop and fast food restaurant. This redevelopment aims to cater especially to families, making shopping more accessible and convenient. Yasuhiro Ooshita, president of the facility's managing company, expressed, “The main target is families, especially those with children. We want to create a venue where daily life can take place comfortably.”
The renovation has not only introduced new retail options but has also enhanced the layout to reduce level differences for easier navigation. With approximately 1 billion yen (around 9 million USD) spent on the renovations, the management seeks to redefine the shopping experience for local residents.
The new store lineup boasts several firsts for the region, such as Noel YAMAMOTO and Emilia for apparel and sundries. Other notable openings include Higo Pet Friendly, set to debut on April 4, 2025, and Burger King, which opens its doors on March 25, 2025. These additions reflect the management's intent to diversify shopping options and attract various demographics.
For example, Higo Pet Friendly is touted as one of the largest pet shops in the area, featuring trimming salons and pet hotels to cater to pet owners. Meanwhile, LOCUST, known for its rock-bottom prices—up to 90% off regular retail—has also generated interest among budget-conscious shoppers.
Ooshita also mentioned, “We aim to create spaces where families can enjoy shopping leisurely as part of their daily life.” The focus on bright lighting and white walls throughout the space contributes to the welcoming ambiance, transforming it from its previous, less inviting setup.
Since its initial opening, Riverwalk Kitakyushu has drawn significant foot traffic; the facility welcomed 11.5 million visitors during its first year. Nevertheless, the number of visitors has steadily declined due to fierce competition from neighboring commercial centers.
To combat this trend, the facility's management plans to continue renovating other parts of the complex through fiscal 2027, enhancing its appeal to shoppers and ensuring it remains relevant within the community.
With this grand reopening, Riverwalk Kitakyushu is poised to become more than just a shopping destination; it aims to be a vibrant community hub where families can connect, shop, and create lasting memories.
