SYDNEY - The 2025 United Cup Tennis Competition has become the stage for surprising breakout performances, none more so than from Chinese tennis player Gao Xinyu and Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, who’ve both shone brightly as their respective teams aim for glory.
After displaying incredible talent and resilience, Gao has captivated both fans and analysts alike. The 27-year-old’s career took off dramatically at the United Cup, where she led China to the quarterfinals, showcasing her remarkable skills by defeating higher-ranked players. Gao defied odds by overcoming Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia and Germany's Laura Siegemund, both of whom fell to her tenacity.
“I was very nervous before the United Cup. It is actually my first time representing my country in such a big game,” Gao shared with Xinhua, highlighting the pressure she felt. Yet, she quickly found her footing and thrived on the big stage, culminating in her match against Haddad Maia—a nail-biting, three-hour battle where Gao triumphed with scores of 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.
This match not only set records as the longest women's singles match in United Cup history but also marked her first win against any top-50 player. Reflecting on the experience, Gao stated, “I feel like I’ve done everything I can,” proud of her significant milestones.
Unfortunately, following her grueling efforts, Gao had to withdraw from the quarterfinal round against the United States, where she was set to face world No. 3 Coco Gauff. Despite this setback, her contribution was undeniable, leaving her fans cheering at the Perth's RAC Arena, where she felt the warmth of her supporters. “I didn’t expect there would be so many people to cheer for me,” she said, expressing her gratitude.
Meanwhile, Hubert Hurkacz is leading Poland with determination, having just navigated his way to the brink of the United Cup finals. Hurkacz displayed dominating performances, most recently overpowering Alexander Shevchenko with ease, achieving a 6-3, 6-2 victory. This win was instrumental as it set Poland on the path to potentially securing their second consecutive final appearance.
“The last match here gave me a little bit of confidence, and I’ve been playing every single match with more energy,” remarked Hurkacz after his strong showing. His performance was notable for his exceptional serving, winning 80% of his first-serve points, which solidified his standing as one of the tournament’s formidable competitors.
Hurkacz had faced challenges earlier in the tournament, suffering losses to both Casper Ruud and Tomas Machac but bounced back impressively after earning his footing against Billy Harris. Reflecting on his earlier struggles, he stated, “I’ve been learning how to handle the pressure and it feels great to return to form.”
With Hurkacz’s leadership and skills, Poland is optimistic about their upcoming semi-final match, eagerly watching as Iga Swiatek, currently ranked No. 2 globally, prepares to face Elena Rybakina, the former Wimbledon champion. A strong performance from Swiatek could propel Poland directly to the finals.
Both players have undoubtedly proven themselves as rising stars during the United Cup, as they prepare to face new challenges. Gao aims to continue her upward trend by qualifying for the Australian Open, stating, “A grand slam tournament is definitely a goal. Every player's dream is to participate.”
The stakes are high as the tournament battles heat up, promising thrilling tennis and extending the ambitions of these talented athletes. Excitement sweeps through their teams and fans alike, as we witness gripping matches leading to one of tennis's major events, and the hope for both players stands tall.
With resilience, skill, and determination, the United Cup has proven to be more than just another tennis tournament; it’s showcasing players who are ready to claim their space on the world stage.
