Rising Stars Shine In March 2025 Sumo Tournament

Younger wrestlers achieve significant wins, showcasing skills and ambition in Osaka.

In the exciting atmosphere of the March 2025 Spring Sumo Tournament held at Edion Arena in Osaka, several notable wrestlers delivered remarkable performances, showcasing their skills and personal milestones. From familial legacies to thrilling wins, the day certainly belonged to those keeping an eye on their careers in the sport.

On March 19, 2025, in the West Makushita 3 division, Dream Taka (Yume no Taka), the grandson of legendary Yokozuna Taiho, achieved his fourth victory by pushing out Azumazakura, ranked East Makushita 6. Celebrating his win, he expressed his determination to move closer to his dream of advancing to the Juryo division. "It was an important match, so I thought to fight my own style. I was able to go with strong feelings. I have taken a step closer to my dream," Dream Taka shared with a broad smile after the match, reflecting on the importance of the win.

Dream Taka, having emerged victorious with an undefeated score of 7-0 in the previous tournament, approached this match with high hopes. His confidence was evidently building after last season's stellar performance, and he conveyed that positive mindset to his training and match preparations. Despite some setbacks earlier, he took note of guidance from his brother, Okinawa's Sekiwake Oho, who advised him to embrace his abilities in the ring. The encouraging words resonated with Dream Taka, helping him regain focus and momentum.

Meanwhile, Kogo (Yago), who competes at West Sandanme 12, also found success that day. The wrestler secured his fifth win against former Ozeki Asanoyama. Notably, this match represented a significant milestone in Kogo's career, marking his 500th appearance in the ring. Expressing his relief after the match, he stated, "I was just thinking to concentrate and go as I usually do." Despite facing a tough competitor like Asanoyama, Kogo demonstrated impressive technique and mental resilience to turn the tables in the bout.

Debuting in the summer 2017 tournament at the rank of Makushita 15, Kogo is on a determined path to reclaim his previous standing. His experience, coupled with his focus to overcome seasoned competitors, seems to set him up for a promising future. Each match for him serves as a stepping stone on that journey, where the complexities of Sumo require a mix of personal determination and strategic prowess.

One of the most exciting stories of the tournament involves the young and rising star Azumamishiki. Hailing from Ukraine, he has captivated audiences as the youngest Makuuchi wrestler at just 20 years old. On the same day, Azumamishiki achieved his sixth consecutive win by defeating 21-year-old Hakuyozan. Speaking about his ongoing success, he expressed his aspirations, saying, "I’m gradually getting used to Makuuchi. I want to achieve double-digit wins." His performance further solidified his standing within the competition and showcased the raw talent that he possesses.

While the tournament had its fair share of nerves for Azumamishiki, who initially struggled with two losses at the beginning, his resilience and low stance proved powerful, leading him to six successive triumphs thereafter. Each match builds his confidence, and he is gradually adapting to the heightened level of performance found in the Makuuchi division.

As the tournament continues, each wrestler aims to climb higher in the rankings while navigating the intense competition of elite Sumo. With the enduring legacies of their families and the significant milestones achieved, the foundation is building for the future impact of Dream Taka, Kogo, and Azumamishiki in the world of Sumo.

With the Spring Tournament still underway, the anticipation for each subsequent match grows. Fans and competitors alike keep close watch on these emerging talents, eager to witness the next chapter of their sumo careers unfold.
