Rising Stars Of Italian Football Face Tough Choices

Nicolò Zaniolo, Davide Frattesi, and Marco Carnesecchi navigate career challenges.

On December 9, 2024, Nicolò Zaniolo once again made headlines for his on-field performance, scoring the winning goal for Atalanta against Cagliari. While the young striker played a pivotal role in securing Atalanta's 10th consecutive victory, his goal celebration ignited controversy, leading to stern comments from coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

During the second half of the match, after scoring, Zaniolo chose to engage with the Cagliari fans, which didn’t sit well with Gasperini. Following the game, the coach openly criticized Zaniolo's actions during the post-match press conference, stating, “The team cannot afford such reactions,” and emphasized how such behavior can “turn an advantage [for the team] to disadvantage.” Gasperini’s insistence on team discipline and professionalism reflects the pressure and expectations placed on players at this competitive level.

Luciano Spalletti, the head coach of Italy’s national team, also weighed in on Zaniolo's situation. He highlighted the weight of responsibility players have not only on the pitch but also off it. “What makes the difference is what a player shows during games; the behaviour with their teammates, the opponents, and the referees,” Spalletti said during his interview. He recognizes Zaniolo’s potential, asserting, “Zaniolo has great potential... physicality is key for competing in Europe,” indicating the necessity of maintaining composure at professional levels.

Despite the recent upswing with Atalanta, Zaniolo’s prior stint with Aston Villa restricted his playtime, limiting his contributions to the national squad. With just three goals and one assist to his name this season, mainly as a substitute, his path back to the Italian national team is anything but guaranteed. Having had 19 appearances and two goals for Italy, Zaniolo is under pressure to regain his footing, especially as Azzurri coach Spalletti looks for consistency and discipline.

Meanwhile, across Milan, Davide Frattesi is also making waves with Inter. The 25-year-old midfielder, who joined the Nerazzurri last season, has established himself as a key figure, contributing both off the bench and as a starter. Reflecting on his memorable moments, Frattesi emphasized the significance of the team’s Scudetto celebrations, labeling it as one of his most emotional experiences. “Having arrived at Inter last season, my most emotional moment is the second star,” he mentioned, referring to the club's 20th Serie A title.

Frattesi also recalled his impressive goal against AC Milan and noted the exhilarating atmosphere following his last-minute goal against Hellas Verona. “From the pitch, it seemed like people were coming at us,” Frattesi described, capturing the energy and excitement radiated from the stands at San Siro. Yet, he also acknowledged the difficulty of establishing himself within the team, noting, “It wasn’t easy... but by putting your head down and working, you can get there.” His evolution at Inter signifies the steep climb young players must navigate within top-tier clubs.

Complementing the performances of Zaniolo and Frattesi is Marco Carnesecchi, Atalanta’s standout goalkeeper. Often referred to as “the all-stopper,” Carnesecchi garnered appreciation for his decisive role during matches. He has played 20 consecutive matches this season, showcasing resilience and talent bolstered by his consistent saves. Described as someone who “saves everything,” Carnesecchi's skills were on full display during the recent game against Cagliari, where he made miraculous saves against former teammates.

Carnesecchi, who began his career with Atalanta’s youth team, has transformed the goalie position within the squad under Gasperini’s management; traditionally, he had to share time with other goalkeepers. Now, with his consistent performance, he has become the undisputed starter, conceding only 17 goals this season, with strong shows during both domestic and European matches. This performance has not only solidified his place within Atalanta but also caught the attention of Spalletti, who had previously called him up for the Azzurri's training camp.

All these players navigate whispers of expectations and demands surrounding their performances. Italian football is witnessing the rise of not just talent, but also the complex pressures these young athletes encounter both individually and within their clubs. Zaniolo, Frattesi, and Carnesecchi have stepped onto the stage, each contributing uniquely to their teams with performances shaped under scrutiny. The blend of youthful exuberance and ambivalence toward the rigors of top-flight football will likely define the upcoming months as these players aim for recognition not only at the club level but also internationally.
