Rio de Janeiro's Department of Transit (Detran.RJ) has announced the cancellation of its mutirão, or mass issuance event, for identity documents, effective immediately. This decision, confirmed on February 25, 2023, by the newly inaugurated president of Detran.RJ, Vinicius Farah, aims to overhaul the service structure to provide more efficient and quality care for residents.
Following his recent swearing-in, Farah emphasized the necessity of reorganizing services to respect the citizens of Rio. "The decision was made to reorganize the service, respecting the citizens of Rio," he stated, highlighting the importance of efficiency and quality. The cancellation of the mutirão means residents will no longer be able to obtain their identity documents at Detran.RJ offices without prior appointments.
Although the mutirão has been suspended, Detran.RJ reassures citizens of the continued availability of scheduled appointments at its various units. "The scheduled service continues to operate normally within the capacity of each post," said Farah, ensuring citizens can access identity document services, albeit through prior arrangements.
For those needing to replace or obtain their identity documents, Detran.RJ provides simplified options for acquiring the second copy without the need for appointments. Users can find more information on these services at the Detran.RJ website. The first issuance of the identification card, the Carteira de Identidade Nacional (CIN), remains free, requiring only basic documents like birth or marriage certificates and proof of CPF (Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas).
Introduced initially in January 2023, the CIN is noteworthy for its integration of the CPF as a unique identification number, intended to help prevent fraud. The document features advanced security protocols, including QR Codes for authenticity verification, reducing the risks of theft and cloning. Residents can utilize their identity cards as travel documents, thanks to added features such as the Machine Readable Zone (MRZ), commonly seen on passports.
While there is no current date set for when the mutirão may resume, Detran.RJ officials are actively working on plans to reinstate the service at the earliest opportunity. The agency is prioritizing the setup of adequate structures and staff to handle the expected demand. This commitment underlines Detran.RJ's dedication to providing accessible and quality public services.
Residents of Rio de Janeiro, especially those without prior appointments for identity document issuance, are advised to stay informed through the Detran.RJ website and local media channels for updates on the potential reintroduction of the mutirão and other services.
