Gas appliance manufacturer Rinnai has announced a significant recall affecting approximately 372,398 of its bathroom heating and drying machines due to a potential fire hazard. The company revealed on April 15, 2025, that some units manufactured between August 2003 and August 2020 may pose a risk of igniting due to deterioration over time.
The recall comes in the wake of alarming incidents linked to these appliances, including a fire in Hyogo Prefecture that completely destroyed a home in January 2025. While no fatalities were reported, one person sustained minor injuries, and Rinnai has confirmed that since 2019, there have been six other cases of partial burn damage associated with these units.
Rinnai is urging users to immediately cease using the affected machines for anything other than ventilation. The company stated that the risk stems from corrosion in the lead wire extension within the fan motor, which circulates warm air in the bathroom. This corrosion can lead to short circuits and, ultimately, fire.
To address this safety concern, Rinnai will offer free inspections and repairs for the affected units. Users are encouraged to apply for these services starting April 15, 2025, via the internet, with telephone applications opening on April 17, 2025. Rinnai has set up a dedicated hotline for inquiries at 0120-113531, which will operate from 9 am to 7 pm, including weekends and holidays, until June 8, 2025. After this date, the hours will change to 9 am to 5 pm, excluding Sundays and holidays.
In a statement, Rinnai emphasized the importance of identifying affected products. The company is proactively reaching out to customers through direct mail if their installation locations are known. However, they also caution that repair service providers will not conduct inspections or repairs unless prompted by the users themselves.
Rinnai has also advised users to remain vigilant against potential scams, warning that unexpected visits or phone calls may indicate fraudulent activity. They assure customers that their representatives will always carry identification and will only visit at prearranged times.
The company has provided a detailed list of the affected product series and their corresponding model numbers. For instance, the RBH-C261 series includes 22,984 units, while the RBH-C333 series has 295,069 affected units, and the RBHM-C334 series comprises 54,345 units. This comprehensive recall underscores Rinnai's commitment to consumer safety and the proactive steps they are taking to rectify the situation.
As a leading manufacturer in the gas appliance sector, Rinnai's actions reflect a growing trend among companies to prioritize safety and transparency in the wake of potential hazards. The recall not only aims to prevent further incidents but also seeks to restore consumer confidence in their products.
In light of these developments, consumers are encouraged to stay informed about the status of their appliances and to take advantage of the free inspection and repair services being offered. Rinnai’s initiative serves as a reminder of the importance of regular maintenance and vigilance when it comes to home safety.
