Ridley Scott's Malta Comments Spark Political Outrage

Film Commissioner faces calls for resignation after director's remarks on tourism

The fallout from Ridley Scott’s recent remarks about not recommending Malta as a holiday destination continues to intensify, with politicians, activists, and public figures weighing in on the controversy. From calls for the resignation of Film Commissioner Johann Grech to fiery critiques of Malta’s priorities, the debate has laid bare the tensions surrounding Malta’s film industry and national identity.

Nationalist MP Julie Zahra has strongly criticized Johann Grech, accusing him of manipulating Ridley Scott’s comments to suit his narrative, all the whiles ignoring the more pressing issues at hand. “Listen Johann, thanks for the €47 million. But neither I nor anyone else wants anyone to come to Malta,” Zahra lamented, referring to the astonishing cash rebate Scott’s production received for "Gladiator 2."

Highlighting Grech’s failure to address the embarrassment induced by Scott’s remarks, Zahra asserted he has been prioritizing self-promotion rather than providing tangible support for Malta’s film industry. Meanwhile, Andre Callus from Moviment Graffitti described the political uproar over Ridley Scott’s words as hypocritical. “How pathetic is this cheap patriotism over Ridley Scott’s comments,” Callus declared, pointing out the stunning lack of action by the same political figures who simultaneously seem to ignore destructive decisions against Malta’s heritage, such as demolishing historic sites for profit.

“It’s ridiculous,” he continued. “First, they sell out their country to serve a few elites, and then they puff out their chests to defend our nation from enemies who don’t even exist.”

Podcaster Jon Mallia joined the fray, delivering sharp criticism of Johann Grech, stating he seemed far more concerned with his image than the well-being of Malta's film industry. “Johann Grech couldn’t care less about those who employ him or fund his luxurious travels,” Mallia bluntly said. He thoroughly chastised Grech for airing only sanitized remarks from Ridley Scott, asserting, “Pack up and, if you’re capable, go find a job in the private sector. Spoiler alert: you’re not.”

On the other hand, Labour figure Jason Micallef echoed sentiments from the Nationalist Party, urging a united front against Ridley Scott’s comments. “I was born and taught to practice ‘Malta first and foremost’ always and everywhere. I will never bow to any international bully, no matter how famous they might be,” Micallef asserted. He called for both the public and the government to dismiss Scott’s words, which he described as “blabber” and “words without meaning.”

The criticism directed at Ridley Scott emerged after he presented unfavorable views of Malta's holiday appeal at a recent event. While Scott acknowledged Malta as “a treasure trove of architecture,” his follow-up comment advising potential tourists against visiting raised eyebrows. “I wouldn’t go back there on holiday,” he admitted, prompting backlash from various quarters. Interestingly, Johann Grech shared only the flattering part of Scott’s comments on social media, deliberately omitting his unsavory travel advice.

The Nationalist Party vocally condemned Grech on Saturday, claiming his position as Film Commissioner is now “untenable.” They stated, “Our country needs a film industry... not the personal ego of the Commissioner who is supposed to lead this industry,” stressing the importance of focusing on local talent and supporting Maltese film producers to thrive.

Grech, who reportedly earns €12,500 each month, has come under scrutiny for his management of the film incentives system. These incentives, which have reportedly garnered Malta fame in the production world, were criticized for being overly generous, enabling other film productions to reap benefits without sufficient contributions to the Maltese economy. A producer from "Gladiator 2" had previously described the rebate system as “the most generous in the world.”

Despite the uproar, reactions on social media have showcased the other end of the spectrum. Many users on platforms like Reddit defended Malta, with several commenting on the beautiful scenery and rich history of the island. One user vocally expressed disbelief at Scott’s comments, claiming, “I’ve been to Malta twice and would happily go again. What the heck is Ridley Scott talking about?!” Another chimed, “Maybe the wealthy film director in his 80s isn't who people should be taking holiday advice from?”

The online sentiment displayed both bewilderment over Scott's negative perception and frustration with the lack of accountability from Maltese authorities about the growing struggles the film industry faces. With the spotlight now on Malta, the broader repercussions of Scott's commentary could continue to influence not only Malta’s image internationally but also its local film industry.

Many are left wondering how Ridley Scott’s comments and the ensuing reactions will affect Malta’s film reputation moving forward. The recent criticism highlights the urgency for leadership changes and renewed commitment to preserving the integrity of Malta’s cultural heritage and film aspirations.
