Rick Stein Reflects On Health Scare And Upcoming Tour

The celebrated chef shares insights on life after heart surgery and plans to connect with fans nationwide.

Celebrated chef Rick Stein has opened up about his past health crises during a recent interview on ITV's Good Morning Britain. The 78-year-old restaurateur candidly shared his thoughts on life after undergoing major heart surgery, expressing how he once believed he might "be dead" without the operation.

Stein, who has built his legendary career over nearly 50 years, reflected on how he had been experiencing breathlessness for years prior to his surgery. His cardiologist had diagnosed him with a failing aorta based on echocardiogram (ECG) results, leading up to the operation at the Royal Brompton Hospital last year. During the episode aired on February 25, 2023, host Susanna Reid remarked, "A couple of years ago, you had life-saving heart surgery. I know you’re feeling healthy now, but do you think about how things could have turned out differently?"

Rick’s response was blunt: "To be honest, Susanna, if I hadn't of had it, I'd be dead." The honesty revealed not only the gravity of his condition but also his relief post-surgery. Stein illustrated the surreal experience of discussing his health with The Times after the operation, saying, "It's funny because afterward, I did this interview for The Times, and the guy said, 'How are you?' and I said, 'I'm extremely well, with the best will in the world, and I'm feeling really well, but I can only live another 20 years, right?' But they cut out the last bit because I said, 'I'm gonna die, you know.'" He added, "I'm not gonna last, that's what I said," amusingly highlighting the interactions with the GMB hosts who encouraged him, stating, "Well, you're still going strong."

Despite his health challenges, Rick Stein looks forward to connecting with audiences during his upcoming tour, titled An Evening with Rick Stein. Set to entertain across 11 venues from March 2 to March 15, 2023, the tour promises to be filled with anecdotes and insights from his remarkable culinary career. Stein recalls, "I did it this time last year, and it was a success, basically. I think most of the audience know me from all the television programs, so it’s sort of like talking to people. It’s not like being a stand-up comedian and having to say you’re actually funny - people know who I am," indicating the familiarity and warmth he feels from fans.

The chef has become somewhat of a household name, appearing in over 30 TV programs and authoring more than 25 books throughout his illustrious career. His extensive experience adds depth to the stories he shares, making his performances relatable and engaging. "It surprises me because I'm quite shy, and I'm quite good at anecdotes on stage," Stein explained about his comfort level when performing live.

Rick's health scare has not only affected his personal outlook but has also sparked conversations about the importance of health awareness, especially as one ages. It serves as a reminder to listeners to prioritize their health and understand the physical changes they may encounter. His forthcoming tour is not just about sharing stories; it’s about celebrating life and the culinary experiences he has garnered over decades.

Stein’s story resonates with those who appreciate culinary arts and recognize the trials faced by individuals pursuing their passions. Even after all the accolades, Stein maintains humility and growing optimism for the future.

Equipped with resilience, Stein is ready to embrace his next chapter both on stage and beyond, as he celebrates not only his successful culinary ventures but also his perseverance through health adversities.

Fans can mark their calendars for the start of this exciting tour at Brighton's Theatre Royal on March 2, wrapping up at Kendal's Leisure Centre on March 15. This momentous occasion will not only highlight his career but could also serve as inspiration for many, encouraging them to pursue their passions regardless of the challenges.

Stein's legacy, shaped by both achievements and challenges, continues to impact the culinary world and beyond, as he remains committed to doing what he loves best.
